3G signal checking with 6680

What is the "convention" on the 6680 (and other handsets for that matter) in deciding which of 3G or GSM to go for?

I'd like to check the 3G coverage at a friend's place but I am not sure whether the phone will show 1 bar of 3G if it can use a much stronger GSM signal.
I.e. I only want to see 3G signal strength at his place, not GSM.

Check with ScrnScrm about a monitor tool called NetMonitor (I think). It might be able to give these stats.

I somehow missed the 81.1 menu display on netmonitor. There you can disable GSM mode (thus 3G only).

I went to a friend's place to check his 3G signal in Onderpapegaaiberg Stellenbosch. His GSM signal is not very good there and he also does not get the "3G enabled" on his phone. So I thought there was little chance for any 3G signal. Well lo and behold, he got full bar and the speed test gave 360.2 kbps.
