Can anyone explain to me what the difference is between a "3G" SIM and a normal SIM (32K) and why it is essential that I get one with my Omnia next week?

Given a hassle it is to transfer info from my old SIM to the new one I'd rather avoid that if I can. Tried calling MTN who couldn't give me any answer that made sense:(

Found this http://www.mtn.co.za/MTNServices/broadband/Pages/3GSimCard.aspx

AFIK you don't need a 3G sim to access 3G (well I'm with Vodacom), anyway that site says the same applies to MTN. At least it explains what a 3G Sim is (sort of)...

Clearly their help desk staff don't read the website  but thanks.

Anyone know of a painless way to move contacts from my N80 to the Omnia? Given that they will be doing a SIM swap which will take an unknown amount of time to become active, I think it's better that this be done sooner rather than later. Knowing my luck, the old SIM will stop working immediately before I can copy from the old SIM to the phone's memory:sick:

Can anyone recommend some kind of software so that I can back up onto the PC and then copy to the new phone?

When I went to my SP (italk) to get a sim swap, the rep there specifically asked what phone I have got and since I got an Omnia he gave me a 3G Sim.

I bought a memory card reader in December and it can also read/write info from/to sim card. I guess depends on what phone you have got, you can always use infra-red/bluetooth to transfer your whole contacts to the new phone (old sim in old phone->new sim in new phone).

Where did you get the memory card reader and what did you pay if you don't mind me asking?

As far as I know MTN uses USIM for 3G services so if you have been using an older SIM and will now be on a 3G phone that could explain the need for a new card.

Uhm, I got my current sim back in 2001, so its not even 32k, and it works without a problem on any 3g phone

For 2 years now I have used a MTN 3G card.I am not sure what difference it makes but most times I do not receive a 3G signal and have had to change my sim 3 times in the 2 years.I am insured however never in my 16 years of owning a cellphone have I had problems with a sim card before.Perhaps its the phone.I use a Nokia N73.
