First time posting here so I hope im doing it in the right place

Ive been a 3g User for the last 3 years and 6 months ago i bought a modem that allowed me to use HSDPA. Its been running smoothly with no problems, infact I even used to suggest it to anyone who could not aquire ADSL.

As of wednesday the 6th of Jan i began to notice some problems. My connection kept dropping from HSDPA to 3G and then returning to HSDPA on frequent intervals. Believeing this was due to the major storm that was hitting Joburg that wednsday evening, I Ignored it. On Sunday the 10th I phoned Vodacom to question what was going on. The operator kept telling me that i should check my GPRS settings to make sure i was only catching 3G even though i clearly stated it was not dropping to GPRS it was a HSDPA 3G problem. The conversation ended by him telling me there are probably more users using the tower and therefore the traffic is causing the problem.

I am currently posting this at 3:12 AM and I am still experiencing these problems. Maybe im wrong but surely this is an issue with the tower?

Flipping between 3G and HSPDA, should not really be an issue. Flipping between 3G/HSDPA and GPRS however can be an issue. Set your dash to 3G Only and see if that makes things better.

What I have noticed with my 3G also is that when I am not actively using the modem and it is sitting idle, the connection will drop down to 3G, but when I start browsing again etc, then it steps up to HSDPA.

V3G mentioned this some time ago, that the Network saves resources by switching the modem to 3G when its idle. Cant remember which thread it was.

Yup. That is the way it should work. This allows for the most optimal usage of the tower resources.

Yip. Agreed. Was just pointing this out to the OP so that he might consider this as something that is happening to him. Think it is the most likely explanation. If it was dropping down to GPRS, then it would have been a signal issue.

Thanks to everyone who answered so quickly. I wish this was the case where my connection changed during time of idling but alas it is when the connection is at its most busiest points. Im an avid gamer and i experience this when there is lots of data being transfered or even little amounts. There seems to be no limitations as to when it happens and the frequency varies between 2 minutes and 15 minutes at a time.

I have seen some gamers mention using a continuous ping with a certain packet size to keep their link on HSDPA. Try that in addition to setting a 3G only profile.
