3G tower coordinates grabouw, cpt

Thanks a lot VodacomData :). Wow 27km. Is this just for 3g or gsm/gprs as well? Funny enough, they do get a weak signal at certain places.

Are you trying to solve reception issues to make cell calls or get internet? 27km might be a bit of a stretch for 3G even with an antenna. If you want to make calls as well then a B970 might be an option. It has an analogue jack for attaching a phone. Slap a twin-sim onto your contract and stick that in the B970 with a high gain antenna and things could get interesting.

Yeah was thinking of a B970 router or something similar. Would they be able to make a call while surfing through it? How does the twin-sim thing work? Was also thinking a prepaid option would be safer for them.

I don't actually know if you can call and surf at the same time.

Twin-SIM was the original car phone concept. When you switch on the carphone it overrides your main phone and calls will route to it. But you can only make and receive calls on one of the SIMs at a time. The twin-sim will always get preference over the main sim if it is on. Your other option is DataSIM but that will be data only, attached to the same contract. Both main and data can be on at the same time as the data sim has it's own number.

Pre-paid cannot get twin or data sims.

I'd also like to know how it goes. Of course, you don't need a 3G signal to make calls, GSM will be fine for that, and GPRS for data is usable (on condition you're not used to 3G or ADSL). My guestimate is that GSM is doable over 27KM with an antenna, assuming the terrain is favourable. Having had a quick look on Google Earth, I'd say the line of sight is better to the closer tower, but it's not going to be a great signal across fairly flat land like that.

I've done 3G over a distance of around 10km before, and it was fine (with a Poynting yagi, very close too line of sight).
