I wonder who will be able to give me a answer??

MTN3G maybe?? :D

Will 3G be availible in Goodwood, Parow, Bellville, Brackenfell in the near future??

3G phones are availible on contracts, on the TV there is advertisements of 3G etc etc etc.

I have a 3G phone, but I can't use the function because there is now 3G Coverage in the above areas.

MTN better pull up their socks what this 3G is concerned.

It's nice to see that there is plenty of 3G reception on the sea. hahahahahaahah

I think Voda is pretty far ahead with their 3G coverage

Piesang, as I've said before, I also would like coverage in those areas.

MTN, as far as I can gather, haven't added a single square meter of 3G coverage to Cape Town since they rolled out their network almost a year ago. And with areas such as Claremont and Tygervalley not even covered yet, I just do not realistically expect to see coverage in your areas any time soon. (Actually, Brackenfell doesn't even have EDGE yet.)

Therefore, I'm waiting for the Vodacom prepaid data bundles - thereafter MTN won't see a cent from my data usage again.

I'm quite disappointed actually! I've been a loyal MTN subscriber for roughly 9 years, and still believe that their voice network is of a much better quality than that of the competition. But voice is old news, data is where its at - and they are failing dismally...

I'm a client of MTN since 1994 and will also rather use the Vodacom Prepaid Data Bundles as soon as it is availible.

Is there any way at the moment that I can use a Vodacom Prepaid Sim with my Jasjar to use it for browsing with 3G?

Probably better to ask in the Vodacom forum, but short answer is yes - if your phone is not network locked.

Just curious - do you have any specific need for 3G speed? Although it should be much faster, it is exceptional if my 3G connection gets more than twice the speed than a normal GPRS connection... Most 3G users use the '3G preferred' profile, that usually still connects to at GPRS @ 57.6Kbps speed.

No - no specific "need" - I actually don't "need" internet either :). But the fact is that it is there. GPRS/3G is my primary means of Internet connection, and should therefore should be as fast as possible.

As an example : GPRS does not allow for the use of standard VOIP services like Skype and Google Talk because the uplink speed is too slow - EDGE or 3G is required for this to work effectively. (Ignoring the fact that this isn't officially being supported by MTN either...)

3G Phase 2

MTN is busy with their 3G phase 2 roll out, Piesang the good news for you is the tower at Goodwood Fire Station is one of the top priority sites in the WC. So 3G should be up shortly.

Bellville 3G Phase 2

The following sites in the Bellville polygon are due to be upgraded:
Tygerberg Telkom uW
Tygervalley Parking Lot
Goodwood Fire Station
Bellville Fire Station
Seesig Flats
NG Kerk Stellenberg
Parc du Cap
Huis Uitsig
Boston Centre
Tygervalley Mississippi
Eskom Belville
Bellville Velodrome
Northern Heights Parow
Oakdale Klub
Louis Leipoldt Hospital
Karl Bremer Hospital
Spoornet CTC Acasia Park

I don't have axact dates for completion (Am based in KZN) but comparing the WC list with ours in KZN they should be done by March/April. Hope this helps your cause.

MTNSPDealer - Any info about rollout of 3G in Port Shepstone area?

Im currently in London and will be returning to Port Shepstone in June and will need to have 3G access for work purposes.

3G in Sheppie

Hi Bru
3G in Sheppie town + Shelly will be up by the end of June. EDGE is planned for pretty much the whole LSC and is being sorted out now with a few sites going up by the end of Feb.

This is indeed GREAT news - thank you MTNSPDealer!

If those are the sites for Bellville (assuming several others over the Western Cape & likely the country), then things really are starting to look up!

We might therefore even be covered before Vodacom can get their prepaid bundles sorted <grin>

Same problem here - only GPRS on both networks @ home... Got an ADSL line with Wireless and only use GPRS / EDGE while travelling...

Hi MTNSPDealer

Thanks for sharing the info with us. I hope that it is correct and that MTN will move quickly to get us covered with 3G. That will be the second best thing that happened to me this year if 3G expands their coverage.

This best thing so far was getting my i-Mate Jasjar.:D

Detailed Coverage Map

If you need to search at street level for MTN 3G/EDGE coverage go to: http://www.mtn.co.za/default.aspx?pid=11789 and click on the street map.
The map is now out of date but I assume it will be updated some time given the rapidly expanding 3G/EDGE coverage.

You could also drive around the hood with your phone out the window looking for the Y'ello Broadband message on your screen....
