3rd Degree last night

I'm in favour of reducing crime and fighting criminals but lately, I'm disgusted at SAPS hyper aggression behaviour. We had a raid at our office not so long ago due to a false tip off regarding tax irregularity. The police came to our office in full gear, rifles and shot guns. I'm like WTF! we're in the business of providing financial services and they expect resistence from a bunch of bean counters?

Then a few weaks ago, our elderly neighbour also got raided without a warrant by at least 2 dozen cops also in full battle gear. They jumped over the wall and rammed open the driveway gate and conducted a search for drugs in the house...and found nada. The SAPS prickheads need to stop watching hollywood flicks and be high profile-ish. You never know, maybe these baffoons will start wearing trench coats and matrix sun glasses.

In short, we're actually getting banged on from 2 fronts, criminals and arrogant cops. Be afraid, be very afriad if shower boy gets his way for his tuff stance on crime. I dread the day that cops will shoot any civilians in the way just to kill a criminal.

The same incidence happened at a Spar in PE when an 84 year old gentleman suffering alzeheimers
http://www.epherald.co.za/opinion/article.aspx?id=420060
WITH regard to the front page report (The Herald, April 7), this is the pits: at 84 and suffering from Alzheimer's, Percy Godfrey must have been totally disorientated and visibly so. Could neither the Spar personnel nor the SAPS see that something was amiss?

A simple phone call to Algoa FM who would have gone all out to broadcast the information would have been sufficient to make contact with his family if Percy was unable to supply information.

But this is the New South Africa – nobody has time for the next person.

Shame on Sunridge Spar. You will not see me in the store again in case the same happens to me in a few years time.

Shame on the SAPS. But then what can we expect when we are forced to have black members of the SAPS serving a predominately white community and then white members of the SAPS serving predominately black communities, resulting in language barrier issues?

To the arresting officers, you are a disgrace to the force. The time it took you to process this elderly gentleman could have been spent more productively going after the real threats to society.

No doubt Percy Godfrey should have had medications for the Alzheimer's and other ailments during his 24 hours behind bars. This break in his meds will cause all sorts of other problems which the SAPS should have realised.

He was an old man. Pepper straying him is way above the call of duty. RIP

Killing him because of a bar of chocolate is beyond the call of duty.
Kriel is a tiny community.
Everybody knows each other.
His family informed shop owners in town that he is a alzheimer sufferer.
In defence of the SAPS it is known that alzheimer sufferers sometimes get agitated because they get disorientated and confused.

However, he was a frail old man that should have been taken home by police.
He should not have been locked up, pepper sprayed and then assaulted to death.

I pray that i would not end up suffering from alzheimers, end up in a rural town like Kriel, wanting a bar of chocolate from Shoprite.
I also pray that i never end up in police cells for shoplifting a bar of chocolate.
I also pray that should any of the above happen, there be at least one decent human being in police uniform at the police station.

Serve and protect has gone out the window in the new South Africa.
Shame on all of us for allowing this to happen.

Who is us?
I did not vote for the people in our local municipal coucil.
I never voted for the inedpt ANC.
You will find that in SA, the people who contribute the most taxes have the least say.

I agree with you.

Commen sense which plays a large role in policing was clearly absent from this event.

Actually - common sense which plays a big part of everyday life was clearly absent from all parties involved with this sad situation. :(
