Durban - Four men were arrested after a dramatic car chase and shootout in Mayville, Durban, on Tuesday night.
Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said two police officers had been patrolling on Felix Dlamini (Brickfield) Road when they noticed a car that appeared suspicious to them.
When the officers tried to get the driver to pull over, the car sped off.
"The members gave chase and the suspects fired shots at police who returned fire. The officers shot at the wheels of the vehicle causing it to come to a standstill," she said.
Mbhele said a bystander was wounded in the crossfire, but she was unable to comment on the severity of the injury.
"A Norinco firearm was recovered from one of the suspects. The suspects were arrested for attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm. They will appear in court soon," she said.
