Hi just wondering if anyone else can inform me on this . I was speaking to a guy at a audio visual shop yesterday and he commented that DSTV wil be switching to 480p in the next 2 months or so with new decoders available soon . Do you guys think this can be true ? or was he talking bull ?

Good question. I'm not 100% sure but i reckon we get 576i at the moment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL#History_of_the_PAL_standard
480p is still not hdtv
though. We need at least 720p.

And according to DSTV the "smartcard marriage" is because you do not own the decoder. So it will be interesting to see if they charge (and how much) to upgrade your old decoder to the new 480p model. Sure as hell it is not fair if they charge you +R1000 for a new decoder that you can only use with a DSTV smartcard.

Are you sure he said 480p because 480p is NTSC. He must have meant 576p!
We are in a PAL region. There is no way it can be 480p.

480p60 is better that 576i50 but 480p60 is NTSC - the PAL one is 576p50

yeah he said 480p , as far as I know (and I'm no expert here) 480p is the lowest HD format (little better than DVD quality) . But like I said , I personally think the guy is talking bull and just wants to sell a hd TV to me ,altho it was at a specialist audio visual shop not some hi-fi corp where the sales people know nothing

Thats your TV resolution, not the MPEG data resolution. Hallmark etc etc are barely watchable... and SuperSport1 is 720x576 (the last time I checked)..
Just checked.. the resolutions I get on lots of the channels are 352x576

mmm... Was actually thinking of getting DSTV, but this doesn't look good. Was specifically thinking I can get their decoder now and when the competition comes I can still use it.
I'm rather going to wait for a month or two then.
I've seen 480p in action, not too shabby, but how much better will 576p look?
