Hey guys,

I just spoke to a Telkom techie 2 min ago while he was checking out my line for some probs I have been having. I asked him about the new bunch of telkom products coming out like triple play he said he didn't know anything.

I then asked him....SO what will become of the 4mb adsl after the trial. He told me that Telkom plan on getting feedback from the customers and after that is positive they will increase the price of it!!! So its no more 4mb for R520....we are looking at R700 maybe or more? :(

This makes me both shocked and sad. Just as we get something good out of Telkom, so they plan to taking it away from us. A leopard cant change its spots I guess.

I guess a lot depends on the credibility of the source.

If they increase the price. it will be sad....

Whats the use if they gave all the 1mbit ppl "upto 4mbit"
If they are anyway gonna charge u for using 4mbit vs normal 1mbit??

If they are gonna charge for 4mbit. then they must be able to gaurantee u that kinda speed. (cause currently 4mbit gives speeds of around 50kb per sec to around 300kb per sec.. maybe 400kb per sec. But only at certian times)

I don't think this is accurate, I remember reading in an official Telkom release that they were trialling the 4Mbps and that if the trial was successful then they would make it permanent. I seem to recall them also saying that they would then look at moving the 512Kbps people to 1Mpbs.

I don't know where I heard it but I definitely remember reading it somewhere.

Well can anyone with other telkom connections back it up? from other parts of the country. If you think about it. It certainly makes sense. Telkoms style is to milk us dry. Who ever thought that they would just give something like 4mb away for "free". Im sure they are gonna make the price higher and send the 1mb users back to 1mb. It will be a sad sad day. Telkom cant be trusted and still thinks in terms of the bottomline. Im sure most if not all on here can agree with that. Just look at the state of our internet environment.

This is Telkom afterall, you get nothing for free. They just want to give you guys the sweet taste of 4mbps. You're all gonna be bandwidth junkies, and itching to upgrade to the new 4mbps price. As far as the speed inconsistencies goes, I think its a best delivery service (or something like that) where the service doesn't carry and guarantees.

I will tell them it is rubbish... since it only really improves local bandwidth... intl can't seem to get more than 1mbps

Well i personally thought they upgraded all the 1mbit ppl to 4mbit. Cuz of the new IPTV services thats gonna be launched soon. Since u cannot watch tv on 1mbit connection alone...

but now.. i don't know. Some people don't get full 4mbit aswell. i mean how is the pricing gonna work ?? like certian amount if u sync at 2mbit, or certian amount at 3mbit??

I have also read an official Telkom thing somewhere which definitely said that they will upgrade all 1Mb users to 4Mb permanently if it goes well. Without a price increase too..

We all know telkom. they don't give anything for free...

That is my thought exactly....please guys don't get me wrong....I wish with all my heart to keep my 4mb intact. I'm just saying that after hearing a techie talk and I bet they have been briefed on some new developments......AND more importantly knowing how telkom historically behaves in this situation ( customers < bottom line) it makes me wonder thats all.

Remeber DSL was uncapped during trials then it was capped on 3Gb on upload or download (you could d/l 3Gb and upload 2Gb you only got capped once one of them hit 3Gb) then you got capped on 3Gb of total up and down but still had local access and then they hardcapped. So Telkom has always been going backwards and trying to make more money (point in case was releasing 384 after 512 then launching 1Mb) this doesnt suprise me.

Exactly. Telkom is about as trustworthy as a rattlesnake

I dunno, but I haven't really been getting a 4Mbit service in any case. In fact, far from it.

Well, on my Telkom bill it says 4096 service not 1024. Therefore how can they increase the price when the whole world is dropping in dsl pricing ... maybe I've got it wrong

ye thats true too. It says 4096K costs R516 on the bill.

So basically they can increase the 4096K's price. But they cannot say.. hey we gonna charge R516 for 1mbit again, and charge u R800 or somethin' for 4096K. Besides that.. not everyone sync's at full 4096K anyhow.. and even if they do. its impossible to get full speed on it for days and days on end. *most people peek around 350kb per sec . rest of the time u get 1mbit speeds anyhow.*

Also i agree with Dan C. Telkom is suppose to try drop ADSL prices as low as possible and try to at least offer Semi nice internet speeds at relevant prices.

Only time will tell..

Unfortunately Telkom can say & do anything they damn well please - who's going to stop them ? Poison Ivy ? Poopy ? Thabo "out of touch, out of tune, and incapable" Mbeki ?

what should happen is:

384 -> 512k

512k -> 1m

1m -> 4m

and prices stays as it is...

more likely to happen, fatter cash cow to milk ;)
