4mb line, 384kbps speeds

Currently downloading a 200mb file from Softpedia @ 25 KB/sec. There's definitely an issue on SAIX or at Telscum ISP.

look even if u have a 4meg line, ur adsl is not guaranteed. this means that there will be times when the synching will not be stable between ur adsl line at ur house and the exchange and when that happens they drop ur line speed to a much more stable speed eg: 512. maybe u just stay too far away from the exchange and 512 is the most stable speed u can get and therefore they put u on that speed.

Its not that...Had 1mb from the first month it was offered...and 4mb since the upgrade....always got 430k per sec...now out of nowhere...50k..attenuation and everything is the same. tried on Telkom account, WA SIAX, WA IS all the same result. :(

Same problem here aswell with 2 x new 4mb lines, both syncing at 4096 but for some reason throttled to 50KB with any speed test/locally multi-threaded downloads. Im in Midrand and 500m from the exchange with brand new copper to the exchange.

I was with some Telkom technisions at the exchange and they tested my lines directly at the exchange with their notebook and modem and exactly the same story, syncing at 4096 but speed stays at 50KB. They said that they requesting that my ports get re-loaded, but after this its still the same.

This has been going on now for 2 weeks, and I get every 3rd day a call from Telkom asking if the problem is fixed and when can they phone me again to find out if the problem is fixed. Like hellooooo, you must phone me once you have the problem fixed !! Even the last call from Telkom the lady asked if its fixed, I said no, she asked what is the problem, I asked do you have the technical knowledge of ADSL before I even tell you, she says yes, I tell her the problem, she replies, ohhh, she will have to ask someone else... sheeeezz what a total waste of time :(

This problem was also discussed here a week ago

Wow, so its not just a few of us...there are more people. Well how do we go about finding out whats going on or what the reason is? I will give one of my telkom buds a call and see if I can find anything out. I have such a DL cue waiting. what a waste of a month. An IS account gone down the drain.

stefano international speedtests don't multithread hence why you may find the speedtests show as they do. try the iburst speedtest and see what speed that gives you

With the IBurst's speed test I got result of 3.9Mbps.Downloading files however from eg ( http://www.apache.org/ ,www.java.sun.com or www.sendspace.com ) maxes out at around 50-60KBps

It's like in taking a journey to the promised land of milk and honey only to find that you're actually in a desert

Slow speed on ADSL

I Agree, I ahve had this line for about 6 months and can't get more than a 512kb/s connection equivalent.

I have raised this issue with our account manager, I am fortunate to have a company account, and even he gets shunted from pillar to post when trying to get me an answer.

I think I am going to phone Reuben today, found his contact details on Google.

Yea, useless. Telkom claimed it is an issue on the cable at the exchange, however, I think they are talking bollocks. Let the ****ty speeds continue.

Telkom was out today again and tested a few different ADSL ports at the exchange, and all of them had the same problem of maxing out at 50KB/s.

So now im waiting for some techie to come and fix the ADSL ports at the exchange. Hopefully this is now the real problem and the techie will coom soon :rolleyes:

Eh, last night my adsl line kind of died. Syncs, however, I get nothing. I hate telkom, I truly dislike them.

just multithread downloads and over 90% of them will come in at close to full line speed

they are charging you for up to 4mbps, but greater than 1mbps.

The Bastards

Yes you pay so much for the line rental only to find out you being throttled.

I had the excact same problem was downloading at 40kb/sec on my 384k line then I upgraded to 4mbps and that was it my downloades dropped down to less than 10kn/sec on certain files having to wait hours for big files to download. Telkom ADSL support couldn't help me nobody knew what was wrong until one night I started multiple downloads and what do you know each of the 5 downloads were downloading constant at 20kb/sec.

End result;

Telkom can't help you because they are clueless;
You won't be able to download 1 big file anymore unless you wish to wait forever;
If won't help you downgrading back to 384k line again because your downloads will continue to be throtlled by the mysterious person/software that nobody knows of;
You local downloads should still be fast;

Oh ja did I mention that while Telkom were busy trying to figure out why this is happening to me they ended up in breaking my line and after a couple of days down they had to give up and my line was downgaded back to 384k because they couldn't fix it to work again and know only works on one router because all the other routers picks up the line crc's and then dropps my line. So now I have half a adsl line and a Telkom bill for a 4mbps line to pay.
