Hallo

I have upgraded my adsl from 382kbps to 4mbps

And I use axxess as my ISP which tells me that do not limit my speed the line speed determine my speed.

But I do not get more than 512kbps I have a Belkin N1 vision router, and it shows my line as 4096down and 512 up.

Any suggestions?

Could be that your ADSL exchange does not support more than 512Kbps, seen this happen to one of my colleagues.

You can phone Telkom and ask them what is the maximum line speed you can get from your ADSL exchange. Provided you have not done this already.:)

512 kbps sounds perfect for a 4 Meg line.

Mine only tops out around 420 kbps.

Remember that it is a 4 megabit line, not megabytes.

basically divide your 4096 mbps by 8 and that gives your download speed (Kbps)?. if its 512 that's perfect

Axxess offers a semi-shaped accounts...

These accounts are shaped during the day and you get a maximum of 512K (im on 4mb and thats the max speed i get during the day with my webafrica account)... After 5 the speeds begins to rise and it reaches peak speeds after 7pm

512 kbps is not 512 kilobytes/s, it's 512 kilobits/s, which is 64 kiloBytes/s - which is ABNORMAL for an ADSL line, as I said.

Edit: besides, 512kB/s on a 4Mbps line would never be achieved, because of the IP overhead. I've never seen more than 450kB/s myself, and never heard of anyone getting more than 480kB/s - so if someone complains that they're getting 512kbps on their line, it would make more sense that they're getting 512 kilobits (around 50kB/s), which is abnormal for a 4Mbps line

at the end of the day Fragtion's point is:
kbps = bits
kb/s = bytes :P

LOL! b = bits, B = bytes
so even kb/s is technically kilobits/s, but kB/s = kilobytes/s :)
Very silly and confusing terminology, I know!; and I know it seems like I'm being picky about it, but I'm not - I saw the miscommunication going on so felt I should share what I know is more correct - I was once corrected for making the same mistake :)

Would my router sync @ 4096kbps if the exchange only support 512kbps?

My speed tests is also only about 420kbps

Telkom have been @ my house 2 times to try and sort this out but none of the people could tell me if the exchange is only 512kbps

They did try to allocate a new dslam what ever that is, but it did not make a difference.
