hey guys,
just got my new 4mb line installed, im not blown away by my speeds, some things are fast, some arent ... I downloaded a file from a US Server at 16kb/sec ... at the same time I started a Download of Itunes and it was downloading at 260kb/sec ...
Im using Afrihost 5mb Account, are there international bandwidth problems at the moment ?

how are these numbers for my line ?

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 511 kbps
Line Attenuation 57.0 db 38.7 db
Noise Margin 9.6 db 10.6 db

You'll find that a 4 MB line gives you variable speed depending from where you downloading from....you are no longer the weakest link :)

as foryour numbers....not an expert on that....

1) Line attentuation increases as you get further away from the exchange / copper quality decreasing (rule of thumb), yours is very high

2) Noise Margin Decreases as quality decreases, 4mbit 100% stability you want 8+ snr

Basically, you're fine for 4mbit but just making it, lower numbers can work but sync losses happen (know from experiance)

What can influence speed loss is errors on the line (this would also affect latency's), go run a speedtest to a local server and see what its like, I know speedtest.net I always get maximum line speed.

will do a speed test tonight, where do I change ADSL modulation? not home to check right now. i have a netgear dgn2000

mmmm that sucks ... so in other words im lucky to get 4mb ? and i def wont get 8mb if they upgrade me ?
is there anyway to improve this ?

Do you have a pots filter on the line?

Always remember it is not 4mb, it is UP TO 4mb. So your speed will vary between 1mb and 4mb depending on the time of day and the IP that you are downloading from

Is it from from 1mb to 4mb or 640 kb to 4 Mb? Since I only get between 800 to 900 kb on a 4 Mb line.

nope I havent got a pots filter yet, does this help ?

I'm also wondering why a POTS filter was mentioned, it's used for telephones, not ADSL modems.

Apparently, each 'connection point' in your home must have a pots filter installed; don't know why, my guess would be impedance matching, eliminating standing waves etc. Although, I've played with this stuff and it made no difference to my attenuation or SNR readings.

You phone must be plugged into the filter and not directly into the line socket or else it could interfere with the ADSL frequency band and vice versa.

Your ADSL modem must NOT be plugged into the pots filter, then you will see seriously high attenuation figures, heck...i don't think your adsl would even sync when doing this....haven't tried.

I havent got a phone yet ... so i havent even tried a Pots filter yet ...

I can testify that plugging your phone straight into the Telkom port in your home WILL cause crap if you answer it when someone phones. Learned the hard way lol.

so after testing on speedtest site ... I get 3.5mb down ... I downloaded a patch from that saix game ftp and I got a solid 360kb/sec ... so my line looks solid ?

i just got my 4mb line today as well and i'm deflated from the speeds i'm getting!
maybe expected too much..
torrents floating around 20kb/s...sometimes go up to 150kb briefly then go down again..
whats the poiny if my speeds are the same as my old 384..aargh!
at least websites load better.
