I'm currently with SAOL since late last year. About a month ago I upgraded to a 4MB line. Soon after the upgrade, my brother noticed that we were not getting the correct speeds. Download speeds were (and still are) in the region 0f 80kbps, and the router syncs at the following speeds (Downstream Rate = 1504 Kbps and Upstream Rate = 512 Kbps). I lodged a complaint with SAOL, and they "fixed" the problem after some days, but there was still no change. SAOL then said they found the fault and logged a fault report with Telkom. After a few days I received a phone call from Telkom saying they would fix the problem. Again, still the same speeds. I complained to SAOL who escalated the query. Telkom called me today - they reset the line and said everything should be fine. Nothing has improved. Generally I am a patient person, but I'm at my wits' end now? What to do? :(

So nothing that I can do? Just accept it the way it is...

80 kbps... Really?
If it is the case, you're getting screwed.
Even 80KBps is nowhere near the speed your line is syncing.
It does reach the guaranteed minimum though.

They do sometimes throttle the line, or set it to sync at a lower speed.

My 4MB line was always syncing at 2MB, even though it is a very good line.

After some to-and-froing, I eventually threw my toys and they changed a setting at the exchange (no physical work was performed).

The next day it was syncing at 4MB !

But I guess that it is possible that there are physical issues on your line.

I also wish to point out, that even though the line now syncs at 4MB, it is still not that fast, and isn't really faster than what it was when it was syncing at 2MB.

Phone them and complain. I had the same issue and let them have it. I've had a solid 4096k connection for a few weeks now. Not sure what they did.

He cannot phone Telkom as he is not the owner of the line. SAOL is the owner and he has to work through them.

whats the issue when your router show the meg coming in but speedtest shows 1.5, is that an isp problem

You can keep pushing... but be aware that they can at some point say "that's it".
Yeah, that's exactly what happened today. It was the third "complaint" by SAOL. Today Telkom called saying they can't do anything because of physical issues in the line, etc. They said I should downgrade to a 2 and 1/2 Meg line from Telkom, as I would be wasting my money on a 4MB line.

SAOL only offers 512kbps...Mmm, I 'll see what to do...??

Disgusting :(

I "upgraded" my line from 384 to 4mb on Thursday and it's just been getting slower and slower.

And it's NOT an isp problem. I tried my Axxess local only account and it won't go above 800 kbps. This is just pathetic and sad.

I informed Telscum about it but haven't heard back yet. This is just sickening.
