4MB line syncing at 1.5Mbps

Some Advice, please!

Moggie, if you're around, or if anyone else can reply...

Okay, so since the last "complaint", Telkom made the download speeds better - they are now in the region of 1.00 - 1.30 Mbps, instead of 0.80 Mbps. Currently I am paying R399 to SAOL for the 4MB line + R29/GB topups + 1 free Gig.

Am I correct when I say the following: If I downgrade to a 512k line, download speeds will not necessarily be in the region of 512 kpbs, but may be lower, as what happened in this case (4MB line syncing at 1.5MB).

If I downgrade to 512 kpbs and pay R299 to SAOL for a 512k line + R29/GB topups + 1 free Gig, it's not really worth it compared to my current package, especially now that my download speeds are better?

Any advice? Should I stick to a 4MB line?
 
If you downgrade to 512kbps, then your downloads will be at minimum 416kbps, maximum 512kbps.

The R100 extra effectively gives you at least double the speed.

Me? I would stick with SAOL and the current setup; until someone comes around with a better value and QoS proposition.

Don't want to reveal who you're with, heh...;)

Just one last thing, all this buzz about uncapped. My brother wanted to go uncapped, but I haven't decided though. I hear the buzz, but there still doesn't seem to be good offerings, at least I don't think so. I see people complaining about MWeb and all sorts of things. Any thoughts?

I prefer not to comment on ISP's. It is very much a personal choice and everyone has their own preference.

My advice would be to read up on this forum and ask a few of the "older" members about SAOL, MWeb, Axxess, Afrihost or WebAfrica.

The best advice I can give you is to read the fine print regarding the fair usage policies and remember, you get what you pay for!

I have both a capped and an uncapped ADSL account and a 3g account (I like to be in touch!).

An Update...

I just wanted to confirm something...

My brother called Telkom at least twice saying that our line was not syncing "properly" so to speak. Of course, I know that because of the physical issues in the line and the distance we are from the exchange, our maximum line speed will depend on these factors. But when my brother called Telkom, they reset the line and it showed an downstream rate of at least 2MB. The thing is that when you switch off the modem for at least a minute or longer, the downstream speed goes back to our usual speed of about 1.3 - 1.5 Mbps. I was just wondering why this happens - why is the line speed not stable? I guess it all goes back to how far you are from the exhange??...

EDIT: Mmm...Moggie has turned into Sting...
