4Mb shaped or 384k unshaped?

I'm currently using a 384k uncapped Mweb account and am relatively happy with the service so far. The only thing getting me down right now is the hectic shaping that happens when pulling stuff from Rapidshare, Megaupload etc. At 11PM last night I was averaging 30kbps - 50kbps which is just sad.

I was fully aware that this kind of shaping would occur when I originally bought the account but since I was new to the ADSL game I thought I'd try it out for a while and see how it goes.

I'm now considering an upgrade so that I can at least get reasonable speeds for most of the day. I'm however a tad unsure as to whether I should just upgrade to an unshaped account or if I should go for a 4Mb shaped account?

I would prefer a faster link in general but it all depends on kind of speeds can I expect from rapidshare, megaupload and torrents during the daytime on a 4Mb shaped account.

Is there perhaps a recommended pre-paid 1GB unshaped 384k account that I could try?
 
I think you should switch to different file servers or to another download protocol like NNTP (used by news servers).
I'm almost always getting 40kB/s (not kbps) on my 384kbps Mweb uncapped when I'm downloading from the Mweb news servers. I've had a few occasions where the speeds were poor, especially during office hours, but lately I've had 40kB/s during office hours too.

384kbps unshaped will give you better latencies when playing games on overseas servers, as well as better download speeds from file hosting sites like RS/MU.
Are you using free accounts at RS/MU?

For daytime downloads you're gonna have to switch to openweb GOLD and try the IS or Neology backbone.

News servers are great however I'm unfortunately not going to find everything I'm looking for on news servers.

I've been hearing positive things about the Openweb GOLD accounts so would you recommend the Openweb GOLD accounts over the Mweb Internet Addict accounts?

The 4meg addict account is R1999 p/m. So yes. Definitely GOLD.
 
The guys at Openweb provided me with a 384k gold unshaped test account for a few hours (kudos to them) and I must admit I was rather impressed. I was averaging around 37KB/s - 39KB/s the entire time regardless of the type of traffic I was pulling. Looks like I'll be jumping ship soon. :P

The 384k Gold unshaped account is R599 pm whereas the 4Mb Gold shaped is just over R600 so I'm thinking that perhaps I should just shell out the cash for a faster line and go for 4Mb Gold shaped. How severe is the shaping on the 4Mb Gold?
 
You won't experience much shaping, until you download like more than 20GB I suppose.

Yup, you're right about there being no threshold. Do bear in mind that if you end up in the top 50% users that you'll be throttled/shaped extensively!
Of course this doesn't apply to the GOLD package.
