Hi guys

I called Telkom DSL support today, and ask what is my DSL max limit.
I told them I'm currently at 4Mbps and wanted to know if I can be upgrade to 10Mbps?

I use this to check the ADSL speed checker

It shows - "Your current product speed is : 4Mbps

ADSL availability cannot be determined at this stage, for residential please contact the ADSL call centre on 10210, for business please contact 10217."

They said, you are unable to choose what speed you want, because 4Mbps/10Mbps is in the same package and same price, so you are given the speed and can not choose to upgrade it till 10Mbps.
In other words if you request a 10Mbps line upgrade to your ISP and you're only getting 4Mbps, that means your line area only supports up 4Mbps....

What the hell...with my cousin, which lives literally down the street from me, he can get 10Mbps support and my line cannot be determined?

The funny thing is that, my I check my ISP process log, it stats

"speed changed to 10240 Kbs from 2048:Change of speed to 10240 now active"
"speed=10240,status=InUse,"

But then I got an email from them saying

"Thank you for your email.

Please note that your line speed has been upgrade to the maximum speed of 4Mb,
and is now active.

Thank you very much.

Kind regards,"

But because of this, I went ahead and ordered a 10Mbps data package from OpenWeb...now I'm over paying since I can only get 4Mbps...

This is ridiculous

Funny thing. I went to Telkom branch at Bayside Centre, and I asked the lady to check what is the max ADSL support that my line can handle. She checked and said I'm currently on 4Mbps, and I will need to contact my ISP for an upgrade.
Then I asked can my line support 10Mbps, and she said yes, it supports upto 10Mbps speed.

Then I emailed my ISP and they replied:

"Good day,

The highest speed that Telkom allows you to upgrade to is 4meg.

I cannot sync your line on 10meg either as Telkom does not give that option.

Thank you very much.

Regards"

Now i'm truly confused. Telkom said I can get up to 10Mbps, and said the problem is with my ISP, and now my ISP said its Telkoms problem and they don't give that 10Mbps option?

What is going on....

Kind Regards

Your ISP is correct however, they only have access to a web interface, which sometimes get limited by Telkom to which speed they can make a line sync up to.

Few things that can hold your line back on 4mbit instead of 10mbit is the following (even if you friend down the road can):
- You need a ADSL2+ capable DSLAM. Many areas have more than 1 DSLAM, where the older ones are not ADSL2+. You can check this up on your ADSL router at home, to see if you sync on G.DMT or ADSL2+.
- Your DSLAM needs Metro Ethernet backhaul, I don't think this is your problem though if your buddy down the street can sync to 10mbit
- Your sync stats on the line is bad enough that the modem can't sync more than 4mbit. Again you can check your sync stats on the ADSL router.

Chances are, the 1st point is your problem.

1. Why haven't your posted line stats?
2. Does your ISP control your line?

Hi thanks for the reply, but how do you check if my router supports/syncs G.DMT or ADSL2+
Because I know my D-Link DSL 2500u Supports ADSL2/2+

1. Why haven't your posted line stats?
2. Does your ISP control your line?

My ISP manages my line

and what do you mean post my line stats?

I got the from another Email:
"This line will synchronize between 1Mb and 10Mb depending on distance from the exchange"
Which means I'm syncing at 4Mb line...or maybe i'm far from the exchange?

Check your line stats as reported by your router, log onto your router and all your answers will be there, or copy/paste them here.

found something useful:

my Mode is on G.DMT

SNR Margin (dB)
Downstream: 30.3
Upstream: 27.0

Attenuation (dB):
Downstream: 11.0
Upstream: 5.0

Output Power (dBm):
Downstream: 12.1
Upstream: 9.2

Attainable Rate (Kbps):
Downstream: 12160
Upstream: 1204

Rate (Kbps):
Downstream: 4096
Upstream: 512

Stats ADSL.jpg

From the stats, I use MyBB Understanding SNR and Attenuation Rates as a guide to see the noise and quality. and From what I can see, its pretty good/excellent?

"G.DMT full-rate ADSL expands the usable bandwidth of existing copper telephone lines, delivering high-speed data communications at rates up to 8 Mbit/s downstream and 1.3 Mbit/s upstream"
My mode is G.DMT...damn it.
So from the looks of things, my max will be 4Mbps...10Mbps will be a dream now...

Called Telkom again and asked them to sync my line to 10Mbps, and they said that my max is 4Mbps, can't go above that...yet.
So sad...

Keymaster, phone 10210 and spewk to a technician. Ask them to re-create your port and put you on ADSL2+

Then ask them to move you to 6Mbps and see if our line syncs ( do a speed test). Then if it works check SNR and ask to move to 8Mbps (etc.) SNR will drop by about 10 per 2mbps increase in line speed.

Good luck!

you can do that? recreating ports and move to ADSL2+?

But the thing is, my line is managed by my ISP and not Telkom directly, unless it won't affect my ISP?

If I could do that it would be great...fingers crossed

Are you possibly connected to some type of street box such as a UMC as your attenuation figures look very good? These connections are usually limited to 4Mbps but should be first in line for VDSL upgrades.

I have that problem, my router syncs at adsl2+ with excellent stats its just I'm pretty sure that my UMC does not allow speeds above 4mb whereas I know my exchange is 10mb enabled.

My problem is I don't even know where i'm connected, probably to a UMC perhaps.

But is it possible for me to tell telkom to move ports?

Phone 10210 and ask them to check how fast your line can go "give them your Telkom number".

Or try your luck with Openweb (that is why irrespective of my ISP I get the line directly from Telkom - no middle men)..,

Hi

I did call Telkom and ask them to check my speed, they said my max is at 4Mbps, and can't go any higher.

My ISP asked Telkom why I can't go any higher and this is what they said:

"The customer will only be able to get speeds up to 4 meg due to the technology
that it works through."

Which is a WTF moment...but oh well, Ill just think it as a money saving opportunity. staying at 4Mbps saves me like 200-300 a month. and 4meg down speed is good enough for now...will upgrade next year then.
