4mbps downgraded to 1mbps user experiences

I have moved to my own place, and live quite far from the exchange now. So I didn't have a great quality line, it would drop when phone calls came in or in fact when we picked up the phone off the reciever. So I have been having fights with telkom and they got a very nice guy to come out and sort it, which he did. But then the dslam I was on had a huge amount of congestion and I complained to mweb about it. They did all they could and it had improved last week. But R899 for uncapped 4mbps and I couldn't use it... So I tested by downing my sync to 2mbps and the line was more stable. But why pay R899 for 2mbps when I can pay 588 for 1...
The downloads aren't that important to me and I just want a stable connection. 1mbps is good enough. I just have to get used to planning ahead when I want a new game or what ever because now it is going to take 4 times as long to d/l

yeah R900 is alot of money just for internet. the package suits you nicely and you get everything you want.

Indeed, but let's not forget, its R900 for the internet portion, then you still need to add the Telkom tax of R130 minimum for the telephone line we don't actually need... So it is over R1000 for uncapped 4mbps... But yes, it will take some adjustment, but I will get used to it.
I also have a similar problem, I have 4meg uncapped but by my exchange is heavily congested. So the max download speed I get on HTTP or Torrent downloads is 110kbps. Even www.speedtest.net doesn’t go over that 1.2mbps on download. I have never seen it go over 110kbps since I got it, which is about four months now.
I’m considering downgrading to 1mbps as well because it’s just a waste paying R900 for something that doesn’t work properly. I spoke to Telkom several times and logged like 3 faults. They just keep telling me my ADSL speeds cannot be guaranteed and it’s UP TO 4mbps, so I can be running at 384kbps but it can go up to 4mbps depending on how many people are using it, I’m just tired of complaining and fighting with Telkom now.

I am considering downgrading as well, but am considering going to 384k as you don't save much by going down to 1mbps.
When I need speed I can use Cell C.
With my Telkom service I don't think that there will be much difference between 384kbps and 4mbps.

Well if i downgrade then i would be paying R488 instead of R612 for 1meg plus 130GB which will mean a general saving of R124. That saving is too little to lose out on 4meg line i'm afraid. as i said, i use my line for streaming.
would be nice if telkom can drop the 4meg line to R349 and up the 10meg line price to R549 which would make sense. the ppl with 10meg lines are going to overload the exchanges which some of them cannot cope currently. hoping telkom read and take notice. most people will be on either 1meg or 4meg. your 384 users will use their connection mostly for browsing, email, facebook, etc. your small to medium businesses fall in the 10meg line categorie and some heavy parasites who will rape the line to the max and that can afford it.

Been on the 1mbps line for a few days now and what I have noted is that my line feels more stable. No random ping spikes and lag!
The browsing and streaming is not bad either. In fact I don't really notice a difference between the two when doing general browsing.
Gaming feels more solid, I load into games faster (weird I know!).
The only down side is I max the downloads at 112kB/s. I'm used to getting 4X that speed, but in time I will get used to it. For the R311 I'm saving, its manageable and for gaming its absolutely fine (this is primarily what I use my internet for)

thats a massive saving Spyk3er. i would have done the same if i were in your shoes. i think if i could save R200 or more i would drop to 1meg.
Just an update -
I have been on 1mbps for the past 2 weeks now. Averaging about 4-7gb per day. This is more than sufficient and the browsing speeds are fine. Youtube has hicups every now and then, but otherwise, there are no complaints. Anyone else downgrade/upgrade to 1mbps??

I'm thinking about downgrading too. But sometimes when the speed is slow and I get about 1mb, then I get frustrated. So I guess it is not an option.
But I agree, those on 10mb should pay the current subscription. The rest still on 4mb should be paying less. Makes sense!

Hehehe, I also thought that would irritate me... But when you expect 1mbps and you get it, its pretty cool... 5gb/day isn't bad... Depends on what you want to download though...
I have gone the same route this week. ISP is at 1Mb/s uncapped now and Telkom completed my request for 1Mb/s yesterday. Only problem is now my modem synchronizes at 1536/130 which is way wrong. Should be 1024/512 but I am busy getting that sorted with Telkom and yes the savings are huge. 
PS: If there were no overhead you should be able to do 128KB/s on a 1Mb/s line. So the 112KB/s second is just fine.

yeah, 112kB/s (900kbps) is the maximum speed that I get with my downloads.
I still have a 6MB line but I'm using a 1MB uncapped MWEB account for downloads, and I'm quite happy with it.
Only problem is when I need something quick for work and ~110 KB/s takes too long for me :/ ... so then I just connect a fast account on my laptop
