Hi

I upgraded my line through Telkom yesterday to 4Mbps and the lady who helped me told me that the line will automatically sync at 10Mbps as this is supported in my area. After checking the sync speed I see that it's only syncing at 4 Mbps  Would I need to contact Telkom again or does it maybe just take a while for it to sync at its full speed?

Phone them again and ask them to sync your line to 10Mbps, it won't change by itself if you are already on 4Meg.

Its up to 10Mbps, doesn't necessarily mean it will sync at 10Mbps. It comes down to router too, I have one of the first ever Marconi 4 ports Router, it syncs at 4Mbps on my 4-10 Mbps line. If I put a newer router in, it syncs at 6Mbps. But at the same time it could be that they need to patch you to a newer port in the exchange, they did this for me and I had intermittent syncing issues so I asked them to take me back to the older one where I can get 6 Mbps. When I was synced I got 8 Mbps on the newer one.

Your router should display attainable rates in its admin interface under ADSL statistics. If that's equal to or more than 10mb but you're only syncing at 4mb you'll need to get Telkom to bump you up to the higher profile.

I'm still using the Telkom DuoPlus 300w router I got when I signed up. I will need to do some reading up on it to see what speeds it supports

What would "attainable rates" be?

Not all routers display attainable rates. Mine surely doesn't, and it is not like it is ancient, but I am on 10Mbps.

There are a few guidelines to know if you can get 10Mbps instead of only 4Mbps.

1. Your ADSL modem must be ADSL2+ compatible <-- can be fixed if you have an old one by buying a new one
2. Your DSLAM must be ADSL2+ or better (eg. MSAN) <-- can only be changed by Telkom
3. Your DSLAM must be on Metro Ethernet backhaul, and not ATM backhaul. <-- can only be changed by Telkom
4. Your sync rates must be good enough for 10Mbps <-- you can change this by removing noise on your line, like Alarm, Fax machines ect, or just replace POTS filters. Also Telkom can improve this by replacing the line from the pole to your house.

You can't bend or bypass any of those rules.

If the ADSL Availabiity Checker on Telkom's site says 10Mbps is supported, does that not mean that the DSLAM is ADSL2+?

No that means the exchange is

I pass everything except 2, but my work down the road passes everything with 6 megs and we use the same exchange so I presume my UMC box isn't upgraded yet, but whats strange is my work one hasn't been upgraded from what I have seen still is the same UMC box. (I drive past it everyday in Taunton Rd)

Would I be able to verify the DSLAM's speed by contacting Telkom on 10210?

You can check it via your router

If you cant use Adsl 2+ and stuck on g.dmt even after forcing Adsl 2+ then you on an old Dslam/UMC box.

If its not that you on an old card which I suspect mine is on seeing as everyone else gets adsl 2+ on my exchange and in my area and when they replaced the old card I was getting Adsl 2+ but the throughput was only 512k so it wasn't compatible with my line so they replaced mine with another old card which was the same version as my old one.

They said my card is hard to replace or something with a new one for Adsl 2+ :wtf:

The checker on the website is not always accurate sadly, which is the case more than not.

What most people don't know is, in an area, Telkom will have multiple DSLAMs if you are not on a MSAN yet. So 2 houses next to each other could very well be on different DSLAMs. The house that ordered ADSL 4 years ago, is on the 1st, older DSLAM in that area. The house next to it only ordered ADSL 2 months ago and happened to get put onto a newer DSLAM. The area usually will be on the same backhaul however, so you could have Metro Ethernet backhaul, but be on a older DSLAM and thus no ADSL2+ thus only 4Mbps.

Would I be able to verify the DSLAM's speed by contacting Telkom on 10210?
They won't divulge this information, but more importantly, the callcentre wouldn't really know where to look to begin with. Most ADSL modems will however tell you what protocol they sync with. Eg.
ADSL G.dmt <--- ADSL1
ADSL2+ <--- I think you know where this is going by now :)

Yes I do :) This thread has been very helpful. I doubt I'll apply for a 10 Mbps package anytime soon, I just figured it would be nice to have the option :)

Well at the very least, check if your modem is syncing with ADSL2+ and what the SNR values are before you give up.

I live in an old area so was one of the first to get Adsl after Isdn then others followed after and as far as I know theres only one Box Covering Howick Rd which does Athlone & Wembley according to Telkom and their techies so if others in my street or area can get it I should be able to also.

So thats where I came to conclusion its the hardware my line uses which is old after testing a new card which gave Adsl 2+ but was only set to 512k so changed back to my old card or I would have gladly stayed on it :D

Telkom is confused.

Maximum speed available in your area is 4Mbps
Your current product speed is : 4Mbps

According to their website.

However I am synching at 6mbps and using ADSL2+

If I calculate based on my margins I am capable of synching at about 20mbps.

Wonder where the bottleneck is

Hi

I'm on a TI Uncapped 4Mbps and I've been wondering if my line would be be able to sync and be stable at 10Mbps? It currently syncs at 8Mbps and is stable. Below are my router stats. What do you guys think?

Code:
Mode: ADSL_2plus
Traffic Type: ATM
			Down	Up
SNR Margin (0.1 dB):	133	120
Attenuation (0.1 dB):	280	140
Output Power (0.1 dBm):	80	49
Attainable Rate (Kbps):	19008	1080
Rate (Kbps): 8032	639

Thanks :)
