Hi

Yesterday evening at 18:30 I went to the Telkom shop and upgraded my line to the Fastest ADSL package, which should be 4Mbps.

Today I disconnected my router and realised that it's much faster (I had 384Kbps), but noticed that in the router's settings it's displaying the following speeds:
640 Kbps Upstream,
768 Kbps Downstream

Is this correct? The Upstream looks correct, but shouldn't the Downstream be at least 1024Kbps with a maximum of 4096Kbps?

What do you guys think?

Must must say well done to Telkom who upgraded the line in a few hours after the order.

Thanks!
Edward

Hey Edward, you could try switching the router off for about 10-15 minutes, let it sync and connect again and check the sync rate, if it's still the same you'll have to report the issue ;)

What are your routers statistics? (i.e. Line Attenuation and Noise Margin?)

Could be that you are not able to sync higher. Although 768Kbps seems really low for downstream if you are able to get such a high upstream sync. Also, Telkom are not allowing the 640 Kbps upstream any more, they changed it to 512 Kbps after the trial so that is also strange.

Also it doesn't take much to upgrade your line, as far as I have been informed it is done electronically. When I upgraded, I did it over the Telephone through a sales person at Telkom, straight after the call (i.e. less than 5 minutes after the call) I reset my router and I was syncing at 4096Kbps.

If for what ever reason you can't get 4096 (or closer too it), I would downgrade to whatever package you were on before, not worth the extra cash for the kind of sync speeds you say you are getting at the moment.

Hope you get it sorted out, and that my 2 cents was of some sort of value :)

Scorpion, he'll be charged a fee for downgrading, you don't get charged for upgrading.

I'd suggest getting Telkom to sort it out ;)

I am aware of that (and it sucks) but at the same time there is a big problem there with those sync speeds. I would also suggest trying to get it right first but if not successful a downgrade would be wise. I would argue with Telkom though to waver the downgrade fee due to the fact that he was not able to get to the minimum sync speed for the 4 meg line. But even so, in the long term the downgrade fee (although not ideal) would be more cost effective than paying for a 4096 line that is nowhere near what it is meant to be!

Edit: All in all NETSPIKE wants a 4 meg line, else he wouldn't have ordered it, so lets hope he gets it right.

Your DS noise margin is your problem, not to sure on how you can improve it though

Yip, there is a problem there, you can report it, they might be able to replace the cable to your house (they did that for me). Or, if its something more on their side they might be able to make a plan. If you pick up your telephone and press a number to get the dial tone to go away do you hear any unusually high noise or crackling (not a perfect test but can help identify problem).

Read this link, it is a great help in explaining your problem:

Thanks guys for all the help!!! :D

I'm going to get on the phone with Telkom right away. I have noticed that there are some crackling sounds on the line.

Ok cool, but be patient, this won't get sorted out over night. What you must also do is tell them that you want a reduction on your bill as you are not able to get what you are paying for. I did that when I had my problem and I didn't pay for my adsl while it was in that period. They still charge for the bandwidth though but at least some money off your ADSL line rental is better than nothing. Its worth a try!

Good Luck and no problem for the help :)

surely if it's meant to be at least 1024kpbs, they are not providing you the service and thus the downgrade fee should be waived.

You guys are lucky with those speeds.
I am currently on my 512 Telkom line getting a blazing speed of...wait for it:
50 KB/Sec / 400-410 Kbits/Sec

bigbear isn't that about fair considering overheads and the like

I think ideally a bit of maintenance on the line would be best (i.e. not having to go back to what he had before), if he is in a reasonable distance from the exchange then it could be a fairly simple case of swapping the old copper cable out with a new one. Made a big difference to my line. But like I said before, it is a process and it won't get fixed overnight so you must apply for a refund for the period from now until it is fixed. That's what I did and they did refund me.
