I have been upgraded to 1Mbps. I phoned Telkom and asked them about the 4Mbps trial. They confirmed that my line will be tested for ability and it would depend on that. I now see my line synching at 4Mbps download and 384Kbps upload...
I am on Verizon business unshaped.
I used these speed tests: http://www.mybroadband.co.za/myadsl/speedtest.php

The Local speed tests are like so:
Iburst: 3.19Mbps download, 317kbps upload
Sentech:
Your download speed is: 377.14 KBps, or 3017.13 Kbps
Your upload speed is: 37.92 KBps, or 303.39 Kbps
Gamco:
Your current bandwidth reading is: 2.05 Mbps which means you can download at 262.15 KB/sec. from our servers.

International Tests:
Broadband reports, US East Coast:
Sprint Atlanta: 1049Kbps download, 181Kbps upload, 225ms latency
Speakeasy New York: 1101Kbps download, 204kbps upload, 189ms latency

Broadband reports, US West Coast:
Megapath, San Fransisco CA: 682Kbps download, 166Kbps upload, 325ms latency
Linkline, Los Angeles CA: 716Kbps download, 171Kbps upload, 234ms latency

Occasionally (not often), on the broadband reports tests, I get a warning about the ISP using upload compression.

ADSL Guide (UK?): 712.14 Kbps Download, 206.94 Kbps Upload
Stanford: 661.96kb/s download, 183.0kb/s upload
I get a warning that "other network traffic is congesting the link" and "Packet queuing detected" on Stanford's tests.

Does anyone know why the Telkom tests don't work for me? Is it because I am not a Telkom subscriber? I only see an FTP link which is broken.

Does anyone want to compare? How off the mark is this?
Just wondering.

telkom took off their http test coz it was inaccurate. your tests look just about right

they took it off because it was accurate... I would get the same report on telkom test as gamco tests.
Throttling to the Max... i have check it on another site, which takes your Noise Margin DB and Line Attenuation DB with your sync speed
and tell what you should get off your line.
and it is in the same line of GamCo And Telkom b4 they removed it.

4mb Speed with Line from CPT

Telkom
ftp start off @ +500k/sec and slowy drops down to 400k/sec to 418k/sec (nice throttling there)

Iburst
Down = 3.32 Mbps
Up = 318 Kbps

Sentech
Down = 83.38 KBps, or 667.05 Kbps ( 1mb test )
Up = 35.19 KBps, or 281.51 Kbps ( 1mb test )

Gamco
Down = 4.03 Mbps or 516.04 KB/sec
Up = No option or report

---------------------------------------------------------------------

not even gonna bother about the int test..

I get this:

Your current bandwidth reading is:

3.00 Mbps

which means you can download at 383.98 KB/sec. from our servers.

i get this...

Your current bandwidth reading is:

3.30 Mbps

which means you can download at 421.86 KB/sec. from our servers.

4mb line = 3.3mb line (only telkom could do that)

SO WHERE THE HELLL IS MY OTHER point 0.7Mbps BAND GONE TOoo TELKOM??????

lol - if youre on SAIX then I would complain!
Actually, that server is prolly not capable...

y waste my time on the phone. i still get 400k-420k/sec i jsut want my full allocated speed that all..
not some noobZor telling me what they think the 4mb line should b putting out..

I have the lowest attenuation plus high SNR and I have never got over 1.6MBs on a 4MB line. If I do international tests, I see the network is limited to 1.6. Do certain exchanges have more available bandwidth than others. I live in Randpark Ridge and I know I connect to the Bromhof exchange. Fibre the whole way from the DB box on my corner, with almost perfect line conditions. It's quick, but it always maxes at 1.6MB's. Does anyone else stay in Randpark Ridge on the 792 exchange have the exact same problem? It's been like this since the trial started, not complaining as it's very stable. I have cuzzies on the 4MB trial, so I know what it's capable of. I've pasted the levels so that you can see it's not the line or the Linksys router.

DSL Status: Up
DSL Modulation Mode: GDMT
DSL Path Mode: FAST
Downstream Rate: 4096 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 384 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 31 db
Upstream Margin: 28 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 6
Upstream Line Attenuation: 2
Downstream Transmit Power: 0
Upstream Transmit Power: 0

Interesting...

I must add that I get lower speeds on my Centrino Notebook as opposed to my desktop. My NB connects via WIFI and desktop via Cat5, but the wifi signal is good (am in the same room as access point)

Crickey , you guys are lucky. Got the 4096 line, used to get about 2.5mbps, but lately only getting 106kbps from speed test. Complained to Telkom various times,but not avail.

Have you checked what speed your router actually syncs at. Your distance from exchange & make of router can influence this.

Also there will be some protocol overhead e.g. (ATM & IP) reducing your data (payload) transfer speed.

Magneto - your figures are far worse than mine, yet you get far better speeds in general. Must be something to do with the exchanges. Still looking for someone in the Randpark Ridge area to confirm...
