HI all,

I need a bit of advice on a little problem I am currently having, just to give you a bit of background. I have 3 computers connected to my adsl. Myself, My wife and my son all like playing online games (generally with European servers). I used to have a 512k uncapped account which worked fine and had no problems with it except for a bit of latency or lag every once in a while. I decided to upgrade to a 4mbps uncapped account to try and resolve the lag issue. my hell started

Since I have upgraded, My adsl keeps dropping the line. It got so frustrating as it would keep dropping every 10 minutes or even less. I contacted my ISP and they did a port renew. this seemed to help for a couple of hours but then the problem just started coming back again. the problem is that Telkom are saying it is my ISP and my ISP are saying it could be the line. When I googled the web for the problem I came across this great website where you have very useful tips. The one useful tip was to get some prepaid webtime with another ISP (I didn't even know you could do this). I decided to do this and loaded the setting into my router. Last night the line dropped once with huge lag when all three of us were on. when I left though my wife and son played the rest of the night without any problems. I did a ping test on my previous line which kept dropping and I was getting speeds of 3.2Mbps downloads and with the new ISP data I was getting only 2.3Mbps.

My questions are can the speed of my service have an affect on why my line keeps dropping (slower speeds more stable?) so if I go for a lower speed would it help. The one technical guy at my ISP mentioned something about dropping my speed but I could not understand why to pay for a service and only get half of it out. (Saying that though it has now got to the point where I am starting to think it may have been an option to have listened to him)

And my second question is with three of playing online gaming and having the issue with 4Mbps would it be better to rather go for a 512Kbps unshaped account?

Apologies for such a long thread :erm:

no your line stats, can be find on your router, this will show if line is good enough for 4mps, maybe drop to 3mps if needed to be.

HI Heriticangel

Can you please give me an idea where to find these details on my router, I know a little bit about something and a lot about nothing. I really appreciate your help on this (If you help me get my ADSL back on track to how it should be I will email you a beer through :-). I am just a bit stunned that the tech guys at my ISP did not ask me to do this from day 1? Because if the information from the router will let me know if it can handle the 4Mbps the main answer would have been answered quite quickly.. LOL

Depends on the router

My D-link has the following info for example on it's Statistics -> ADSL page
Statistics -- ADSL

Mode: G.DMT
Type: Fast
Line Coding: Trellis On
Status: No Defect
Link Power State: L0

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 7.7 12.0
Attenuation (dB): 52.0 31.5
Output Power (dBm): 9.9 19.8
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 4512 892
Rate (Kbps): 4256 512

Billion router, Advanced -> Status -> Adsl status
ADSL Status
Parameters
DSP Firmware Version E.25.41.55 A
Connected true
Operational Mode G.Dmt.BisPlus
Annex Type AnnexA
Upstream 511800
Downstream 4095900
Elapsed Time 1 day 0 hr 56 min 15 sec
SNR Margin(Upstream) 11.5 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream) 6.75 dB
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 30.5 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 61.5 dB

So the question is can you find something like that or know what router you have?

You're probably far from the exchange. Call telkom and ask them to set your line to 3meg. Also make sure your adsl router is set to adsl 2+ if your exchange supports it.

Hi guys, here is my line stats as required.. I am currently using a Billion W40 modem. i did notice that it is set to ADSL but I am unsure if I must set it to ADSL 2+ autofallback?

Parameters

DSP Firmware Version E.25.41.55 A
Connected true
Operational Mode G.Dmt
Annex Type AnnexA
Upstream 640000
Downstream 4096000
SNR Margin(Upstream) 12 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream) 11.5 dB
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 24.5 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 47.0 dB
CRC Errors(Upstream) 17534
CRC Errors(Downstream) 0
Latency(Upstream) Fast
Latency(Downstream) Fast

SNR Margin(Downstream) 11.5 dB this is tad low, it should work find but normally you need over 12 to work good, maybe try another router or filter, to get noise snr higher.

keep it on adsl get get better stats then adsl2+

You can try ADSL2+ modulation, but perhaps the G.Dmt modulation (that you're currently using) would still provide a better SNR ratio at 4Mbps down/640kbps up.
