I am the proud owner of a 4 meg ADSL line, I have not gone uncapped because of the cost of having an unshaped, uncapped 4meg line is too high. A shaped uncapped line will also not suite my needs...

So what I'm thinking is that I keep my 4meg line (Cybersmart, 10gig +weekender+nightrider) and then get an uncapped 1meg account with one of the other
ISP's. Will they allow this ? and will they be able to limit it to 1meg, even though the line supports a higher speed ?

Basically what I want to do it start streaming all my TV. The 10 gigs of unshaped will cover most of my viewing hours (SD content), my gaming etc,and then the uncapped 1meg can be used for everything else, like normal web surfing + late night downloads.

Will any of the ISP's allow me to do this ? I have an ADSL modem that support bridge mode/ half bridge already so the setup will be very easy.

Yes, you can use a 1mbps account on 4mb line. The isp's will just throttle your speed down to 1mbps... Occasionally you will spike above it, but not often. Its not a bad idea... Give it a try and let us know what you think!

So who would you guys recommend ?

I'd rather not go with Mweb, and definitely not some one with a long term contract.

Or your line will get downgraded to 1Meg .....

Or your line will get downgraded to 1Meg .....

You think that Cybersmart will do that ? (The line is with them)

I have used multiple ISP's with them before and had no issues. At one stage I think that I was using 3 different account when everyone was handing out all those free gigs.

As long as you don't ask them to downgrade the line you will be fine!

Your line just gets limited by the isp who offers the 1mbps uncapped account...

It all depends on how much you are willing to spend! Openweb is always the first choice for me (gold) and they have a 1mbps openweb gold plus at R450 which I assume will be just about the best you can get but it is only R47 cheaper than an standard 4mbps uncapped account!

Openweb gold, Mweb, afrihost(but not ideal), axxess in that order :)
Check them all out. Also, if you're in cpt, then the latency will be the best on mweb, if you're in jhb/dbn (or those areas) then any IS based account will be fine...

My line's with Telkom (6mb) and I run a axxess 1mb uncapped account at night with good results - +/- 140Gb/mth :)

4Mbps line with 1Mbps uncapped account should work fine. You'll actually get about 10% more speed with your uncapped account in that kind of setup.

Since you're in Cape Town, Mweb 1Mbps uncapped should work very well.
Just make sure that you're not signing a 12-24month contract with the ISP that you're choosing. Most ISP's have a 30 day cancellation period, so you'll pretty much have to cancel 2 months in advance.

i suggest you don't tell cybersmart or whoever else (besides telkom) your line is with, because it probably violates their t&c's
