4meg line maxing at 52KB/s... PLZ help

I upgraded my line speed on Monday and they said I should wait till yesterday. When I checked last night it was finally upgraded as requested. I opened up GrabIt, but I could only max at 52KB/s. I checked on my router and confirmed that I am getting my 4 meg and saw that it is as it should be:

I called Telkom and they said "something is blocking my speed" coz it's "fine" on their side. They said it may be an anti virus or something. I think the guy I spoke to didn't really know my problem coz i don't think that's a correct diagnosis as this thing that's reducing the speed didn't reduce that of 384 which I had before. I mean if it's reducing my line speed, then it should have started on the line I had before.

I am running McAfee, windows XP and have a Billion 400G. I also have an Afrihost acc,, on top of the Do2 I have, but it's doing the same thing. I cant even watch YouTube without pausing and let it buffer.

Please people help me if you can. :mad::confused:
 
thats the limit of one thread, the more threads you have the higher your speed
 
I'm having the same problem. I have a feeling it's got to do with the SAT3 cable which is still not fixed yet...Cause I am also syncing correctly, getting 3.4Mbps from the CT server on speedtest and got about 420kbps download speed from that ftp that Mypro-D had there. Yet anything from overseas US servers, I get download speeds of about 50kbps max...And also having youtube streaming problems. Europe is a bit better though. Who knows?? Will we ever know??

SAIX allows only two threads, right? Both of them are active, but I still get that 51.8KB.

It's averaging at 52.4KB/s when downloading straight using firefox... I don't have any dl manager, but I doubt it would work.:(

Well, you better than me coz you at least have certain servers you can get above 1meg, I haven't tasted that kind of speed yet. I get 52 when I download from that ftp.
The only software that I have installed since I apllied for 4meg is NetWorx because i wanted to be able to monitor my usage. Could it be the mysterious "reducing agent"?

I called them regarding the issue, but they simple said it might be my anti virus and there was not mention of restrictions on the acc. He even knew my acc username and asked for my password to check if it's correct, but he didn't mention anything fishy on the account side. I'm getting the same speeds when using Afrihost coz I'm capped on my Do2.
 
looks like you have a 512 line judging from your speedetests .... get back on Telkoms case and tell them about your speedtest results (phone 0800 375 375) and stay on their case.
 
SAT-3 is down for nearly 2 weeks now, we on the SAFE backup, latency is high, packet drops are to be expected, downloads speed will vary drastically.
Test again when SAT-3 is fully operational again 1 day in hopefully the not to distant future.

Thats what I get at the moment.
On the saix server im getting around 430 - 450 Kb. ( Telkom Account which is capped )

Why am I the only one who seems to be hit hard by the SAT-3 problem? Dames is at least getting 3.4meg on the CP speedtest server, but I don't even come close to that.

Well, I am nowhere near that kind of speed. I would understand if i was at least getting 1meg, which is what they promise, but I don't even come close to that either.

Seems like the only option I have now is to do what Mephisto suggested. Will make one call before I retire for the night, one when eating break fast tomorrow,then another one when having lunch and quite a number after 4 when I'm home till I get what I want.

Anyway, thanks for your help. You replied faster than Telkom answers their calls. :D I might fall asleep holding the phone waiting for an agent to answer my call...:wtf:
 
Damn, been holding on the Telkom line since my last post. I just spoke to a lady who gave me her name as a reference; she said that my line is not fully upgraded yet and she has escalated the request. They should now get back to me before the end of the working hours today.
This lady seemed much more clued up than the guy I spoke with earlier.

Ladies at TI call centres FTW :D

I think it's the DSLAM not the real exchange. But I don't know what an exchange is or how it looks like... but I'm happy coz I don't need to know it, I just want the speed. :D

PS: I have a space in my back yard, do you mind building a lil shack-like cottage?

Though I haven't yet check this morning cause I'm at varsity atm, I still can't believe those speeds you're getting to London and Paris! The latency is hmm...But I only get those speeds from the CT server, anywhere in Europe was maxing at about 2 Mbps for me last night. Pings were higher too.
