I'm looking to upgrade from a family SUV with AWD to a 4x4.

Staying in gauteng, I am cautious of a double cab bakkie due to the high theft risk and insurance premiums - but I'd be interested in your opinions/experiences on the matter.

I have looked at a 2022 Pajero Sport 2.4D Exceed, but was a bit underwhelm compared to my 10 year old Kia Sorento. Interior and features felt very similar.

NCAP safety is high on my list of requirements as is reliability.

If you are looking at established brands only, then I would avoid the Everest and the Fortuner, they are as much of a theft risk as the double cabs.

Perhaps the Isuzu M-UX?

Five door Jimny. If your family is too big to fit in it, run away and find a new one.

If he doesn't like the interior on a Pajero Sport he will hate the interior of the Jimny. Don't even think it has cupholders.

Real men don't need cupholders. If you plot the decline of society on a graph, you'll see a perfect correlation with increasing cupholders in vehicles.

Indeed, its a hard pass on the fortuner. Not sure where I stand on the everest or ranger.

Thanks for the Isuzu mux suggestion. Will check it out.

I quite like the original Jimny but obviously not as a family car. The 5 door looks interesting and may be worth a test drive but 1.5L seems a bit "lig in die broek", especially for towing.

Do you have any stats on this? For example, if 100 Fortuners are sold and 10 are stolen, it's the same theft rate as selling 10 Jimnys with 1 being stolen, right?

@OP, consider getting a Toyota V6 model. they tend to be at a lower risk for theft.

New Prado?
Nice car. But mad expensive. I know I didn't set a budget, but thought the 2022 Pajero would set the tone
Haval P series, or Tank 300?
You mean the GWM P series? Anyone here got one? A bit sceptical of the GWM/Havals in terms of reliability but you can almost buy new/demo vs 2nd hand of the established brands.

The Mitsubishi is a great car and very reliable and a top of the range 4x4... low theft risk

Toyotas = excellent, hijack / theft risk so very high premiums
Fords = excellent, hijack / theft risk so very high premiums
VW = excellent, hijack / theft risk so very high premiums
Land Rover = expensive, excellent 4x4, low theft, reliability not great, expensive to maintain
Jeep = cheapish, excellent 4x4, low theft, reliability not great, expensive to maintain
Nissan = the patrols are very expensive but excellent
Volvo = expensive, reliability problems, expensive to maintain
BMW = expensive, reliability problems, expensive to maintain
Merc = expensive, reliability problems, expensive to maintain
Audi = expensive, reliability problems, expensive to maintain

The Asian cars are new-ish on the market, they look wonderful and their reliability has come a long way, I think most are AWD not 4x4 some are 4x4, but then again do you really need the difference, computers have come a loooong way? A good AWD car is phenomenal.

I would consider an Asian type car, Kia / Hyundai / Mitsubishi / and the other Chinese ones
