Wait, why are you using a double negative? I'm confused, what are you trying to ask?

Are you saying the store refused the 5 cents coins? In that instance it is legal tender and they have no right to refuse said tender that is a guarantee made by the Reserve Bank.

Well the shops have a right not to sell you goods, but if they choose to sell you goods, then they have to accept the legal tender of the country. 5 cent coins being one of them.

nope

if you pay for R10, you give the shop all 5c coins, the shop has the right NOT to accept the coins.

Anyone has the right, who refuses to accept un-reasonable amount of coins.

A guy in my area runs a house shop and he doesn't accept 5cent coins because he says that the wholesalers where he gets his goods from won't accept 5cent coins.

To the letter of the law you have to accept any legal tender. Though you can understand why someone might not. Of course in that same instance I assume they have to charge in multiples of 10c (namely Rx.90 or Rx.00) for an item because they would have no change.

If he wants to sell you stuff, it's you choice of what type of money you can pay with, expect that it has to be legal. What he is doing is not allowing you to buy goods from him. Frame your request to him that way, then he has no legal rights to back him.

Is that the law, if so what are the limits as to how much 5/10/50cent coins you can use as payment.

Edit: Timgaul only saw your reply after I posted

I would suspect that they have the right to choose who they sell things to. I'm sure law does not stipulate anything about them having to accept your money if they don't want it. Most businesses wouldn't accept a bag of 5c's as payment I would think.

It's like if I put my TV in the junk mail. I don't have to sell it to the first person that calls because they have cash, if I prefer to wait for somebody that can pay by EFT... well then that's my right.

Legally they have to accept it, but if they don't, what you going to do? You really don't have much recourse here.

+1 Legal tender is legal tender.

SPAR in Stanger years ago tried to tell me they don't except 1&2c pieces anymore. Should have seen the way I chucked my toys :D

we find that more and more 5c pieces are being thrown away. almost every time we go shopping we will pick up a 5c piece.
