5 things you learnt at school about your body which are completely wrong

MRI scans have proven that sugar excites the same receptors in the brain that cocaine* does. Goes without saying that as cocaine can give a user a sense of euphoria, so can sugar in a smaller effect.

*I have never personally used coke

Chocolate, shopping & sex has the same effect on women, the same neurons fire, the same endorphins get release etc

Some things might have been wrong but so is the article. What's the sauce for this? Oh wait...

The story about sugar references something published in a medical journal in 1995.....

Couldn't find any info on these scans, do you have a source?

As does eating in general and anything enjoyable in fact. Additionally it is entirely correct that sugar making children hyperactive is a myth and that there is no such thing as a sugar high.

If you popped in to the LCHF thread, we could discuss how fats and protein do not have this PLEASURE effect on the brain receptors. Only carbs and sugar.

But we arw not going to do this here.....

Seen this before, its a pretty silly article. Most of this is complete garbage science by people who needed a quick paper.

1 - All of the senses there are built up of the senses you were taught. Those 'new' senses were just published by some dudes to get more research funding.

2 - The tastes you are taught at school is taught to you to allow you to describe a food you are eating. Technically we can define a new taste as the ability to detect any different molecule in our mouths... so again... pointless

3 - This myth was never taught in my school (not sure where you went to school :P) but it was used by teachers to encourage students. This one is more complicated to debunk as we know next to nothing about our brains.

4 - Nothing "makes" you sick except the virus or bacteria itself.....fairly obvious. In context reducing your ability to fight off a sickness is the same as making you sick. Really silly uneducated point by a "scientist" who clearly didn't understand what people meant by making you sick.

5 - Sugar increases energy in short bursts and thus allows a child to be more hyperactive. Yet again a scientist missed the whole point and assumed people thought having a bit of sugar would somehow make the child hyperactive for hours or days.

That is indeed not true. Anyone who has ever enjoyed a good piece of perfectly cooked meat can attest to the fact that they do in fact get pleasure from said food. But don't bring up claims about sugar being similar to cocaine if you don't want to talk about it.

Wrong, as the article correctly says sugar does not generally even make children hyperactive in the short term.

Don't know where you've been, but it is a common myth that has been going around for decades.

2 - The tastes you are taught at school is taught to you to allow you to describe a food you are eating.
Wrong, it was most definitely taught as a fact that we could only detect those tastes and in specific areas of the tongue. Nothing whatsoever to do with describing tastes.

1 - All of the senses there are built up of the senses you were taught.
Are they or do they have their own unique sensors? The way you describe it the people researching it are just making it all up.
