Hope this is the right place, does anyone know where I can get the cheapest 500GB hard drive, either seagate or western digital?

Look at the issues with Seagate first ;)

Scratch em off your list.

western digital =

the safest bet is to get a Samsung. I won't call them great, but they we're always on Seagate's heels... so, for 500GB, its the best choice.

www.take2.co.za has some,
Use www.Bethesda.co.za 's prices as your benchmark.

Yeah, it looks like you have to register with them, too bad for me, I could have saved 300 bucks.

What will happen if I buy a sata II hdd and my motherboard only has sata I?

Dunno... If it doesn't work, you can easily get a PCI SATA II Adapter.. it should be cheapish..

Try the chaps in the Dealer Forums - Esquire in PTA is open to MyBB users - they do Seagate AFAIK.

For WD, if you know someone with a DCC Jhb account...

WTF why must someone pay to buy frm them ??

thats bull* and shouldnt be allowed!

Western Digital is one of the best drive manufacturers ! go for a WD ! Solid as a rock

+1 I've had no problems at all with WD, and my drives are on 24/7... :)
WD is like marmite... it will either be the best HDD ever, or you'll hate it down to your core. My WD HDDs have always been a disaster...
So, your choice. Samsung is still the safest bet.

FYI. Bethesda and Esquire resell to large companies, hence the registration fee. If you spend 20k on pc parts each year, then it will be worth it to register with them.

Well I went off and bought my brand new 500gb western digital hdd and it cost me R900.

Just plugged it into first available sata port and picked it up and everything works fine.

I'm only gonna use the drive for storage anyway so it doesn't have to be uber fast and stuff.

Thanks for the information everyone.
