Guess I've been lucky with WD... :D

I've tried most other brands and currently would rate them as follows (personal preference based on experience) :
1. Western Digital - fast, cool, quiet, reliable, reasonable price
2. Samsung - fast, cool, fairly quiet, reliable, fair price
3. Hitachi/IBM - fairly fast, very cool, very quiet, reliable, higher pricing
4. Seagate - fast, fairly cool, fairly quiet, reasonable price, but reliability in question
5. Maxtor - fast, but loud and run hot
6. Other...

I'm registered with 8 suppliers in JHB/PTA, and have never paid a registration fee - that's just sick if they make you do that... how are we small-fry supposed to survive and make a living in a very competitive market...
 
Just had a WD drive crash on me. :( 2nd one.
Bought a 500gig seagate SATA with 32meg cache for R959.
Hope it lasts.
Have 500 and a 750 gig external seagate drives and no issues.

I also agree with you Juggy I never had to pay a fee to deal with Esquire in Milnerton branch I heard Mustek also charges , but never bought from them before btw who do you deal with @Esquire you should give Emile a try , he goes out of his way to make you feel welcome & he is always pleasent to deal with , this is a far cry to the previous guy i even forgot his name now.
 
What's the speed difference between SATA and SATAII?

How much difference does a cache make? I almost got 8MB - but someone said I should opt for the 16MB. Is it a huge difference?

SATA1 = rated at 1.5gb/s transfer rate
SATA2 = rated at 3.0gb/s transfer rate

Regards the HDD cache, the only thing I could think of is the HDD's internal transfer rates might be slightly faster. Other than that its probably the industry trying to make you believe that you need 16 over 8! When transferring large files, a bigger cache helps.

The speed difference between the 2MB and 8MB cache is bigger, about 35%, but not so noticable on 8MB versus 16MB...
