Hi guys,

As a very new (today) subsciber I am getting a bizarre error. Its occuring randomly on every 10th site or so I link to, any help would be much appreciated. If I open a command prompt and ping the site it is visible and if the IP address is then entered in the browser the site is found. My IP config settings are all as per Sentech defaults (e.g. Obtain DNS server automatically).

Hello,

I was also just on my way here to ask the same question!

[q]Bad Gateway
The following error occurred:
Code:
The host name was not found during the DNS lookup. Contact your system administrator if the problem is not found by retrying the URL. [/q]

As if slow speeds weren't enough.

I have an idea.

Let's skip the the ending: let's all of us that are experiencing this error email everyone at that we possibly can. We all know thats the only way we'll possibly dream of getting this resolved.

Same problem here! WTF!!!! sentech is lame... very lame... THE MAYOR LAME!!!!

"i may just be the dumbest guy on the forum - except for the Sentech Help Desk"

It happens when the server stops trying to access the website

i.e the website times out

Why do you have to "put your two cents in"... but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?

Suddenly happening today

Sentech update your DNS Server !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What Web sites are timing out on you guys?

Regards
Cerberus

Happens to me from a long time ago, i just hit refresh, thats why its there for...

Why do you have to "put your two cents in"... but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?

for one, comedy central

and for two, the official website managed by the south park creators

Noone, refresh doesnt help ( Crtl F5 )

After a few minutes some work, others take a hour or more before they work again

Sites I was getting this error on earlier is working now. Something must have been reset somewhere :P

No, doing it again

It is getting very irretating right now

That is the message from your friendly Sentech/IS transparent HTTP/FTP proxy. It does this when it's unable to resolve the hostname, instead of your browser saying so. It's quite normal. Try typing in http://foositethatdoesnt.exist and you'll probably get the same.

It means that either:
1. The transparent proxy's DNS configuration is wrong.
2. The transparent proxy is unable to connect to the rest of the net to resolve the na,e
3. The host you requested doesn't exists.

Sounds like it's most likely number 2.

I'm getting it as well. But not with the DSL, so by the power of deduction and reasoning it must be Sentech.

It's doing it again this morning. Even my torrents are giving http errors :( Before someone says I must stop moaning, I did email Sentech. Don't know how it will help though.

I agree it's most likely 2, or something similar to 2 - some problem between the transparent proxy and the DNS. (Note, I think you won't get the same if you type in a non-existent domain like http://foositethatdoesnt.exist, because of the way the transparent proxy works, your computer first attempts to resolve the hostname *itself* and then tries to access the web server (by IP address), and only at that stage is the traffic routed to the transparent proxy. And since the DNS lookup between your computer and the DNS still works, the browser will not even try access the site because it'll get an unresolved hostname error and report it to you directly).

Pressing Refresh won't and cannot help ppl, because when it happens, no amount of pressing 'Refresh' on your side is going to fix the problem between the transparent proxy and the DNS - you just have to wait until someone/something fixes the problem on Sentech's side and then try again, seems to only last a few minutes when it happens. If you read the error message you'll see that this is NOT the same as the usual 'can't access server' time-out type of message you get from the proxy - only the "look 'n feel" of the message is the same because they're both generated by the proxy.
