I want one my current SSD is full all the time.
How much duty would you have to pay on something like that?

There is no ad valorem duty on PC parts. You'll just pay 14% tax on 110% of the value. And usually some small clearance fee. :)

How much is a 'small' clearance fee exacty?
And im curious, how much shipping would you be paying? I see they ship for free to anywhere in the USA, but how much to SA? I know its somewhat off topic, but I can never figure out what category PC parts are classified as.
Im not sure about Amazon shipping costs either.

Work on about 25 dollars just to be safe and make sure

Last few times they only charged me R12.50 clearance.

I cannot answer your shipping question, it differs all the time, I just tend to toss my stuff in the basket and check what the shipping fees are at checkout...

at this size i am interested. cost somewhat of an issue.

I know I could just google it but what's the appeal of ssd drives?I know they're faster but I'm sure they're not just to store your movies, right?

they are used to store information that is sensitive to the read speed of your hard drive. so yes typically your movies won't benefit.

but programs on the sdd will load up many times faster. people swear to almost instantaneous load times.

The advantages of the SSD's are:
1) Their random access speeds are 100x faster than that of HDD's, so it can really speed up your PC in terms of application load times and productivity
2) Consumes less power than mechanical drives (eg. hard drives)
3) Much more shock resistant than HDD's

Storing videos on SSD's are fairly pointless, because SSD's are expensive and small, if you compare them with like 2TB HDD's, which is why you usually just place your operating system, commonly used applications and documents on it.

$722 for a 512GB SSD is an awesome price, but still way too expensive for me to consider one of that size ;)

i remember in earlier days there were concerns that SSDs may have shorter lifespans compared to standard HDDs:
i) was that ever true,
ii) if so what is the expected life of a SSD?

arent there laptops coming out with ssd's yet
Yes, there are. Most ultrabooks and netbooks are coming out with SSD's. Other than those, it is only the high-end laptops that can be configured & bought brand new with SSD's. You can always replace the 2.5" laptop HDD with a SSD...

The top of the line MacBook Pro with Retina display can be configured for you with a 768GB SSD even.
