Good Day

Is there anyone lucky enough to be moving over to fibre and letting go/cancelling their 55GB double data deal (for those that got it back in november last year). My data needs have slightly increased and the 25+25 deal is not enough anymore so looking for 55+55 deal - I reckon its about 549 a month currently. Also open to other alternatives.

heres an alternative for you,

get the rain sim card, load the R250 unlimited data put that in your router and surf using that.
when 6PM rolls around, either swap sims or surf using another device.

myself, Im lucky to own 2X B618, so when 6PM comes round, simply switch off the one and use the afrihost data.

Haha thats exactly what I have been doing. I only have 1x B618 but it does the job very well. However my issue is not from 11pm to 6pm but those 5 hours inbetween that - thought my 50gb would last but I under-estimated just how much data Netflix can milk. If I was the only one using data I wouldn't have any issues but I introduced the family to the net and streaming and cancelled dstv. Now the data we have is not enough for us all

only other thing is maybe set the quality lower, to not HD,

but yes, being on capped and streaming movies will finish your cap very quickly.

might I suggest cell C black? at least that data is free?
so load a cell c sim in one of your devices and stream using that?

Will look into cellc black - not a big fan of their coverage. Afrihost/Rain combo has been pleasant so far since last year. There is also the issue that black friday is round the corner so new promos could come up or prices could fall. I will look into cellc black thanks

I am not sure but it possible to download certain episodes beforehand with Netflix, then just schedule all downloads that time.

Can you explain exactly what 2 data products you are using there and the cost?

Availability becomes the issue - not sure how well telkom would work here as the coverage map shows we are not covered. Also the night surfer option is not needed as there is the rain uncapped option that bids me well from 11pm - the sticky part is when 6pm rolls around - since its teh time everyone is at home and resting and unwinding. Data usage is high hence Rain mobile being smart and charging for data during those periods.
my guess is, if 50gb is not enough for that period then 60gb may not be able to cut it.

Hence the search for 55Gb package that was on promo as that would mean 110GB for R549

Cell C could be an option but surprisingly no Cellc LTE coverage. Only afrihost seems to just cover us through Rai.n

+1 in terms of my planning when trying to move away from dstv. For now, i have to consider using Fixed LTE as we will not be living at this premises beyond another 12 months.

Many of us are using dual packages to survive in this data jungle. Rain mobile coupled with some fixed LTE package be it rain or cellc. Only other alternative is taking over a telkom uncapped package that used to be R599 - I read that they have 300GB FUP which I can live with.

Best option though would be a rain mobile all day uncapped option. I would jump on that with both hands should it ever be a reality - lets see if Black Friday brings with it some good news from these ISP's

The unlimited off-peak data plan on Rain is R250. I average 450gig monthly on the Rain unlimited data plan ( and can still do more). The fixed cell C LTE ( for usage between 6pm and 11pm when Rain plan is capped) gives 100 gig monthly for R530. I immediately switch sims at 6pm and 11pm daily. Total monthly cost is R780.

Hi @eg2505

This sounds interesting. How does cell C black exactly work?. How much does it cost? Is it a contract? Do you get a new sim or ... Kindly clarify for me.

If i may offer some insight - I looked into it but they took a simple idea of netflix and convoluted it and made it complex for no reason. In anycase https://www.cellc.co.za/cellc/black that will show a small summary but the whole info is here https://www.black.co.za/

Basically showmax in orange overalls in my opinion

Thanks Phly. But is their data unlimited though?. Wouldn't mind signing up if I'll be using their data on other streaming services.

Last I checked they only had data for their platform but it was an entire fibre bundle for 799. Not sure if it exists anymore or in that form.

As far as I understand the new OOH allowance from 1 Dec, you can upgrade to 55GB that way from 1 Dec. I'm guessing though you want anytime data?

Yea I wanted anytime data. Because at the end of the month I will be paying same amount for half the data. The extra data in December is cool but it’s in the very same time frame as rain bolt on package. Which I already have. I am however hoping some good news will emerge.

When dealing with customer service in SA you clearly need a box of tissues. This is RAINs response to my query about their OOH offering from 1/12/2018

"Thanks for contacting rain. Please refer to your ISP with regards to OOH data as it is offered by the ISPs and not by rain"

So there we have it. Rain clearly is not offering the OOH data but the ISPs are. Go figure!!
