just a dumb question...

what kinda speeds do you people with 56k get lately?
when I had it it used to download at like 1.5KB per second or something pathetic like that!

56/8=7KB's

Depends on the quality of your line, I used to get 5-6KB/s with @lantic

yup, using an atlantic account i can get 5.5 (hardly ever 6). I mostly dont expect more than 5 though.

on average 5kbp/s, i get 1,1gigs download and about 300-400 meg upload on a weekend (friday to monday) using overnet (the donkey owns!). 4 gigs a month only on weekends, i dont know how u guys last with a 3 gig cap

Sounds about right, I get between 4,8 and 5,3 on Discovery. Sort of happy with that considering the price. It is a bit sucky for online gaming, but what can you do. Will wait for August before I change to anything else. Been looking at Uninet's offerings :o

I'm with a TelkomSA account and usually avrg. 5.2Kbps, occasionally get 6k. AMF I remembered someone once saying in a thread that they could connect at 54Kbps... phoned the TelkomSA help desk and asked them why I've never seen anything more then 52K on anyone's pc (and I've seen alotta dial up connections :P) and the retard says to me, and I quote "It is the luck of the draw sir. And between you and me, getting more then 48k on a crappy Telkom line is something to be thankful for."

Telkom here, when I'm lucky, maybe 5.
Average ~3

Then again my mdk10 box refuses to connect higher than 49333, hell knows why.
Sometimes it even connects at 4200 (yeah, like, 4.2), strange hu?
And that from an authentic H.T.G. external duxbury.
The lines are [near] perfect (had 'em tested).
Guess the mystery will stay unsolved :P

Hehehehe, awesome one that MaD...

I have always had weird crap with my USB modem. Windows reports back that i am connected at 19200, but i donwload at 5kb/s. So the connections speed, in my case at least, does not indicate the true capabilities. Go figure.

Im with Discovery healths connection and i get about 5.5 - 6.5 (6.5 if i leave it on all night to download)

Interesting, my copperwire must have someing wrong with it then as I only average at about 5. Maybe the pop number I use also effects the process. Hmm, maybe find a different pop number and try it, thinks I.

Used to connect at 45.2 with a duxbury modem. Got speeds of around 5kb/s. Tried an old mecer modem which boosted my speeds to around 6kb/s. They just dont make modems like they used to

Connect at 115.2Kbps on ABSA (As many con-current connections as you want) ... download at 3.3 - 4.0 Kbps on Average. Today however I downloaded at 10Kbps for more than two hours... I double checked every log etc... it was doing 7 - 10KBps. I download about 700MB per weekend

Its all about line quality, the speed you would get while handshaking with the other modem.

Most users wont get over 50,000+ connection speed, regarding the 115,2Kbps, thats just a ****ty driver not showing ur actually connected speed but rather the port selected speed.

5k+ is good for 56k, nothing that can be done about that. In fact, SA has some of the best performing analog lines in the world LOL , I remember when I used 56k and even still, I would ask a friend or 2 overseas who also had 56k and they would not get close to 4k/s :)

i used to get max of 2kB/s
now I got DSL192, never slower than 20kB/s
oh yeah

I've got a wonky line, my transfer rate does not remain constant, but goes up and down between 6k and 0k... all the time. If I'm lucky, the line will hit and stay at 8 to 80k for half an hour, but then it'll be back seesawing between 0k and 6k.

It's making me very unhappy.
