Hi, I want to upgrade my gfx and am intersted in the 5870 but I read some unconfirmed article about the 5890 coming out soon.

Is Southern islands confrimed? And when?

Should I buy the 5870 or wait till the end of the year and see what happens.

6000 series ATI cards are supposed to launch in November, which likely means availablity in SA around December. Havent heard anything on a 5890 yet. Its a tough decision, but it wouldnt be wrong to get a 5870 now.

December is like 3 months away - that isnt too bad. wonder what the pricing will be and if its 28 or 40 nm.

Think Ill wait, until then my old 4870 will just have to keep on trucking until then. Blast SC2 kicks my pcs ass on max detail.

6000 series will be 40nm, the foundries skipped the 32nm node. So you ca expect the 7000 series to be a 28nm chip.

Get a 5870 now, the 6000-series is a minor improvement. 5-series prices have fallen nicely so now's a good time to buy.

+1, last year, I waited, for the GTX400 series, this only happened in like March, then waited for some pricedrops, and waited, and waited, finally got me an Asus 5870 on Friday, and it is one of my best buys yet

Out of curiosity, why not 460 Sli?

Wait until the end of September and then buy or else you will have to wait until next year April thats when the pricing and availability seems to make a significant change in the South African Market.

with PC's if you wait for everything new you will wait forever
plus the next level cards is not predicted to get a major feature upgrade
current 5800 series already has DX11

I'm busy upgrading at the moment and waiting for my parts to arrive. I also wondered about maybe waiting but the truth is that no matter when you buy, prices will drop and new hardware will appear.

The fun part about waiting is that you keep working on the build, on what you will get. It's fun.

You know what's better than that though? Actually buying the stuff. :) So yeah I say go for it. Buy that 5870.

And never sweat about the price the way i see it for example my 8800gtx cost me R4500 i use it in a second pc now and its still very decent!!! but it served in my primary pc for 2 years R4500 / 24 = R187.50 per month ie: not bad for entertainment for a month.
