Hi Guys, for the purpose of learning i will provide my input on my current use of 5G for gaming. I only play FIFA and that is on a PS4. To create a base and comparison this was my setup prior to utilizing Rain 5G.

PS4 Pro System
Connection - Wired over 10meter Cat5 cable.
Router B315
External Antenna : Poynting Xpol 06
Service Provider : Telkom - Uncapped Smartbroadband
Speed : 8mb Download / Upload 2mb Latency - 25ms to 35ms

The above setup served me well for over 2 years, the last three months has been hell my speeds initially was between 30mb and 35mb / Upload between 5mb and 8mb. Gaming on this line deteriorated to frustration with me hating the game. The line has been plagued by input lag / Ghosting and me swearing at the tv Lol.

5G Experience

PS4 Pro System
Connection - Wired over 10meter Cat5 cable.
Router 5G Rain Router
External Antenna : N/A
Service Provider : Rain
Speed : 180mb to 200mb / Upload 10mb to 15mb - Latency 7ms

Guys there is no words to explain my happiness .... Pure Pleasure FIFA20 runs better, very responsive with local players. International players are very playable with a very slight input delay but i can live with that. I am actually trying to build a local friends list of FIFA players ( PS4 ).

Strangely enough, I didn't think it would make a difference to gaming, but clearly it does. I will give it a shot this evening. Maybe BF1 with international servers will be ok to game on finally. @cavedog you got BF1?

I am a avid FUT player with the wrong type of internet. I used to have rain with FIFA17 and 18 it was playable then got a WISP connection FIFA19 was horrible always lagging and now FIFA20 is even worse i think its atleast 1-2 second delay. I cant wait for 5G in Cape Town.

Hi Andre will definitely add you to my friends list. I don't play FUT though i am a bit of a purest. I play seasons alot as i feel its more realistic when it comes to the squads a team has. Yes i know its alot of fun i just don't have the time and patience to invest in FUT. My online profile ID ( LFC4ZA ).

To Be honest i don't have any idea which direction the tower is in. I am a bit afraid to call them and ask as i used my work address to sign up for the package as i have full coverage in Midrand. My home address supposedly has no coverage i fall just out of the coverage area, i would say about 350 meters or more.

Although still in "testing" phase with 5G fired up BFV last night and it does seem to have cured my in game stuttering. System is plenty powerful enough to run game (2080 Ti, Ryzen 9) but was getting hectic stuttering even on 1440p.

Still getting around 30ms latency on ZA server which is pretty much what I was getting on 10meg ADSL. Still need to tweak line though current average is 68/2. A far cry from the 500+ guys seem to be getting.

Have you spoken to RAIN about an external unit?

My gaming has improved over LTE very nicely. I now get +/- 180ms ping on BF1 where before I was getting 220 on a good day

Just says you're at a friend's place if they ask. It's not tower locked after all.

You can use optimizer.rain.co.za to get an idea of which direction.

Hi Guys,

Today i managed to use some of my work contacts to assist in acquiring a Poynting 5G Ready antenna. I hope to increase my speed and hopefully the Upload as well. I was assured by the consultant that should the external antenna not produce the desired results i was welcome to return the antenna within 14 working days.

I will post the results of the tests guys. As i mentioned before i have no idea which direction to point this antenna. But with my experience with the Xpol-06 if you point the antenna in the general direction of the tower you should see improved speeds. I hope it works out.

Wouldn't omi-directional take a lot of guess work out of it? Cavedog mentioned that connecting antennae to the two ports in the back of the CPE PRO effectively degrades 5G performance to a 2x2 mimo devices. 5G needs 4x4 mimo. I'm no expert in this field. Maybe he'll chime in on subject.

Drifting from topic but Just spoke to RAIN tech guy (great service so far) and seems my signal strength is poor. Anything over -90 on RSRP is poor. They are escalating to see what can be done.

5G RSRQ -15.0dB
5G RSRP -117dBm
5G SINR 0dB

Guys I can confirm using an external antenna does not help the signal. I connected the Poynting antenna to the modem and as everyone had mentioned the antenna only makes the signal worse. The signal strength dropped from 4 bars to 3 bars. I tried the antenna in various directions but the results were dismal to say the least. The unit has been packed away and ready to be returned on Monday.
