5Mbps iBurst, firmware upgrade

I wonder how many will actually get those speeds since many can't even get a stable 1mbps right now.

I think you are dreaming as that post is from 30 May 2007, and they were promising 2mbps the previous year.

I reckon, that if you got 320kbps average right now, with this upgrade you should get 5x more, ie. 1.5mbps

Forget it the towers will have meltdown as many are already overloaded.

The first opportunity I have (and i'm sure many others) I'm leaving iBurst... Whether it been Neotel or ADSL available in my area....

I've bee an unhappy client for almost 4 years now! Enough is enough.... I couldn't be bothered what speed they offered... Unless it uncapped I'm not interested...

I seem to remember that for the 2mbps you would need a dual modem each part giving you a max of 1mbps, now if this is true how can a firmware upgrade all of a sudden give an existing modem the speed of 5mbps.

Something does not smell right here as the one story contradicts the other.

On a side note, "the total downlink throughput achieved by one BS is 21.616 Mbps", so even if they increase the number of base stations by x5 it still won't allow for new suckers to achieve the faster speed.

"Each iBurst base station has a maximum total uplink and downlink throughput of around 32 Mbps over just 5 MHz bandwidth (64 Mbps with 10 MHz bandwidth), and download speeds of up to around 1 Mbps for each user can be realized."

However, if one considers iBurst's current backhaul bandwidth supply it is highly doubtful if iBurst would be able to obtain enough backhaul bandwidth to realise this.

Seems there are conflicting specs for the base stations as I got that info from their spec sheet 4th page.

Still iburst sa is taking crap as per normal about 5Mbps speeds.

bwahahahaha 5Mbps in SA? by IBURST SA? roflmfao!

I have good technical reasons to doubt that the current UTD hardware can do those speeds. It can barely do 1Mbps under ideal conditions.

oh but you stand to be corrected... my connection is generally 1Mbps day in and out, provided there's not strong winds, rain, broken BS, etc.

Well look who is responsible for the 5 Mbps statement, that says it all...
Excuse me, mr. i-can't-spell-my-own-name? This is an article from the founders of iburst technology,

It also appeared on myadsl sometime ago: http://mybroadband.co.za/nephp/?m=show&id=6579

A firmware upgrade does not necessarily mean that the device would now utilise a larger spectrum, it may use the existing, but only better utilize the same amount. The base station may also be upgradeable, and thus may have a larger capacity.
