6630 shortage?

So I finally decide on getting a new contract with a 6630 -- I may not get
much 3G for a long time in my neck of the woods, but the software you can
get for the Model 60 phones really looks impressive, and it looks like the
best combo of EDGE-capable + 3G smartphone that somebody like me
can (almost) afford.

And I can't find anybody that has a 6630 in stock -- I've been all around
Empangeni/Richard's Bay and even phoned iTalk in Durban.

Is there some reason I don't know about for the stock shortage -- there
were newspaper & TV ads for the 6630 every couple of minutes and
now suddenly I don't hear about it (is it just being replaced by the 6680?).
AutoPage are kind of wierd and just don't offer the 6630 at all -- but I
presume that this is because of the "not on vodacom because it doesn't
have a front-facing camera" story, although somebody said that the
6630 has "been withdrawn by all the networks."

Thanks,

So its NOT just me...

I've renewed my contract with iTalk already on the 2nd of June, and am still waiting for my 6630 to be delivered. I selected the 6630 because the video calling doesn't really interest me, the 6630 is marginally faster than the 6680, and because it was available cheaply (or so I thought).

Stories given to me over the last few weeks, in order of appearance:
- It is in stock
- Its been dispatched via courier and should reach me the next day
- Its not been dispatched because of stock shortage - new stock on "Friday"
- They're getting stock the NEXT "Friday"
- The stock is stuck in customs, but will arrive this week

I'm too afraid to phone them again because next they might tell me the stock still needs to be manufactured

I realise this isn't with MTN-SP, but if anyone can throw some light on the matter?

Tahir - there have been a number of attempts to ask you not to enter the MTN broadband site and criticise retailers when you are nothing more than a vodacom agent (although I am sure they do not endorse your behaviour). People come here to get peer information with network joining in to give information and resolve queries. They do not come here to get biased comments from competitors in thin disguise.

MTNBroadband, actually he is making a total tool of himself.... and Vodacom.
Who would want to deal with a company that has agents like him.

Leave him alone... he is the worst publicity Vodacom can possibly get :)

May I share my experiences with regards to upgrading to a 6630.

It started like so:

It took me almost 3 months to decide on a phone. I frequently went to consult cell shops, the internet, and mtn themselves to help me make the right choice. The people at the mtn dealership and admittedly the other network's branches as well, know very little about the phones they are selling.
They could not once provide me with the info I wanted. Yes, the v3 has bluetooth and mp3 playablility. It says so on countless ads. I want to know more details, like the battery life, response time, memory size pim funtions etc.

Am I the only one to experience these dimwitted clowns? If so, I apologise profoundly.

I phoned mtn over 25 times in a timeslot of only 72 hours (i know, that is a bit excessive) to check whether or not I am able to upgrade my handset and every time i got a different answer. Sometimes it was 20 May, sometimes 20 June and some even said 20 August. They never could decide. Finally I told this to the dealership and he said he'll check, so I gave him my reference number(s) and off he went to check. He finally was able to confirm the date as 20 May.

Anyway, then I had to wait for the handset. First it was due to arrive on a tuesday (so said on a friday). Then I was told their supplier does not have stock anymore on the day. They couldn't tell me when it would be in. A week later the still couldn't tell me what was going on and kept trying to sell me a Razr v3

Finally, I got fed up, phoned mtn branch in durban and orgainzed a handset from the walk-in centre myself. I told the very helpful person on the line (really, she was) about my grief. But as driving 300km for a phone I just couldnt do, so again I contacted the dealer and after explaining my dissatisfaction, "urged" :o to find a phone. Which they all of a sudden could get delivered to me in 24 hours. The next morning I had the phone and cancelled the reservation at the walk-in centre.

When I spoke to a lady at mount edgecombe (is that spelt correctly?) she said they frequently receive complaints from customers about poor service from smaller mtn dealerships. But mine totally sucked.

And yet these people apparently frequently go for training, yet they know nothing.

That experience sounds incredibly frustrating. There are a lot of factors outside the direct control of MTN but nevertheless we are very keen to improve this experience. Please private mail me with any information which could be used to plan things differently (and better). I have spent quite a lot of time recently intervening to improve this and I can also learn how we can pass out information more effectively when the handsets are purchased and tested.

Spoke to my SP again today - still no stock, now only scheduled for middle JULY.

Asked about 6680 - was told that these are also tied up at customs in the same shipment! (I thought these were to be available for the 3G rollout?)

Oh well - guess I'll be stuck at GPRS speed for at least the next month still...

Please advise where you got the story about the 6680 in customs because we are distributing them to stores that order

You are visiting the wrong shops.Stock was available at the end of May 05

MTNBB, the story on the 6680's came from the iTalk renewals department - a dude called "Mark", if memory serves.

I'll drop them a call again tomorrow - maybe I get a different story - they're quite good at that! (see post above :D)

(I've stopped buying the customs thing on the 6630 as well - stock stuck in customs for a month - 6 weeks if I believe Mr Mark?? Starting to sound a tad ridiculous...)

Spoke to them again today - seems the last guy had his facts in a knot.

The 6680 will be in stock and available from the 1st of June... (But the call center staff will be killed on the spot if they were to divulge any hint ahead of time as to what it will cost on upgrade.)

6630/6680 stock on July 1?

Today on 083 1 808 I was told that stock of both the 6630 and 6680 should be available on Friday, 1 July. On MC100, the 6630 would cost R299 and the 6680 is R999.

We'll see what we see on Friday...

Wow! If that price is accurate, I'll be impressed... I think its way too low,
when compared to what must be paid in on similar VodaCom contracts!

I'm gonna see what a local MTN store says...

My 6630 was delivered yesterday afternoon!

Can therefore confirm that iTalk has stock of the 6630 at "free" on all contracts. (That special ends today though...)

Nokia 6630 @ R299 on mc100. That is what I paid a month ago as well with my upgrade. I think the R999 for the 6680 is a bit steep, don't ya think?

Lucky you... I paid R399 for the 6630 in February on Procall 120

The reasons for this are quite complex but consider (one thing) that the rand was very strong a few months ago and has recently weakened.
