70-300mm Nikon Lens

I have a Nikon D90 and is looking for a 70-300mm lens for wildlife and field sports.

Where is the best place to this lens ? and what model would you prefer ?
 
Get the 70-300VR, it's a good lens and great value for money - really sharp from 70-200, and just a little less so from 200-300mm.

Try www.orms.co.za and www.outdoorphotoshop.co.za, but also get other prices, you may get it cheaper elsewhere.

Of course you also get better lenses, but for a much higher cost.

Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR might be a bit slow for sport when the sun goes down and the lights go on. I don't know much about nikon but something in the f/2.8 up to f/4 might be a better bet.

Yeah, but a 70-200VR II and 200-400VR II cost just a little bit extra. The combo about 15 times as much.
 
If it was me I'd look out for a used Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG IF HSM APO - I know a couple sports photographers that have this lens and they can't stop raving about it.

One of those is definitely better than the other (you can tell by the price which one) but neither are spectacular. Their new 70-200 is supposed to be pretty decent though.

That is the lens recommended by Jola higher up or at least very similar to it ;)
I have the 70-300mm VRII lens and though like Bwana mentioned it may be a bit slow during darker conditions, I have had little to no issues with it. Also using my lens for wildlife photography, and the lens is more than adequate for my use.
I don't have experience with the F2.8 zoom lenses, but I am not a professional either. Nor do I intend to spend +20k on a lens.

Just bought the 70-300mm VR and it was fine for a game park vacation. I looked at the Sigma options but the Optical Stabilization model costs almost as much as the Nikon
