Cape Town - Two women were among the 79 people arrested for drunk driving, in a busy weekend for Cape Town's law enforcement officials, a city official said on Monday.

One woman drove her BMW on the wrong side of the busy N2 highway between the R300 and Borcherds quarry on Saturday night, mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said.

An officer who had been helping at a roadblock earlier was on his way home when he spotted her. She was arrested for drunk and reckless or negligent driving, and taken to the Delft police station.

Another woman was arrested in Pinelands, also for driving on the wrong side of the road and was taken in on the same charges.

In other wins for the officials, the roadblock unit discovered, after a high-speed car chase, that the man they tried to pull over for not wearing a seatbelt and for not having a number plate, was driving a stolen Mercedes-Benz C Class.

On Friday, Metro Police officers caught two men carrying fake guns, who were allegedly part of a gang trying to hijack a cold drink truck on the corners of Stellenbosch Arterial and Nooiensfontein Road.

Public transport vehicles were policed over the weekend to ensure drivers stuck to their routes. During one of these operations, a taxi driver tried to run over one of the officers. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

“Alcohol and speed remain the top killers on our roads and it is disheartening to see that so many drivers still drink and get behind the wheel,” Smith said.

They drove on the wrong side of the road to evade the road block. I've seen some crazy moments

how did she even do the wrong side of the road on that stretch?

her premiums are probably lower than mine. because she is less of a risk. ffs. insurance needs to update their assumptions based on recent experience. vroue is varke op die pad.

Durbanville is vrot with ghost squad over weekends. Can't even walk around without risk of getting kack from them.

isn't the visibility a good thing? its when you don't see them then the bugs crawl out of the cracks to cause trouble.

what exactly are you doing in public that you don't want them to have eyes on?

Strictly speaking, you cannot be drunk in public :erm:

Some of these cops take that seriously when they want to.

dude there are suburbs in this fair city that are crying out for that kind of visibility. be grateful you have it.

They seem to constantly focus on certain areas though. Jeses Christ, look at Tableview, it's a fcking mess. Maybe one police car passes by a night. Go out in Durbanville, walk two blocks up to the next pub, and get kack from some prick in an unmarked car. Tsek.

EDIT: Some perspective: I occasionally work at a popular night spot in Tableview, and I see what happens there and how pissed the people get. Lots of them take a taxi, but compares to those who drive, it's nothing. Police only drives past around closing time, for some or other reason.

Too true, I live a stone's throw from those night spots and it generally is out of control, at least the dodgier places sometimes go belly up (cheerio German Locker) and force the underage drinkers to find the next spot that doesn't check ID's

About a year ago, a very drunk chick drove her CIty Golf into 5 people right in front of Doodles. I think one went to hospital, not sure about the rest. She was back 2 nights later.

Really? I used to live there 10 years ago. The cops used to be hectic in that area over weekends. Almost everyone I knew there had been arrested for DUI at some point or another. We used to walk everywhere and they would still stop to check if we were drunk.
