7900GS upgrade to 4850

I used to be perfectly happy with my 6600GT, but decided to upgrade to a 7900GS. Yesterday I saw a 4850 for R999, and thought Hmmmm, maybe I sell the 7900GS, and buy the 4850. It is this forums fault; all the talk of upgrading has rubbed off on me :)

So is it a good buy???

Waaaaaaaaaaaaait. The new 5 series is coming in 23 days, so you will see an even bigger drop in prices.
 
What system specs are you running though? You may not see such a performance gain if you have an old cpu though so it may not be worth it.
 
I have an e6600, which I upgraded from an E6420. All benchmarks stayed the same after the upgrade, so I assume that my VGA card is holding things up....

Maybe I will wait, did not know about the 5 series thing....

I would take that advice, I was so dam impatient when I bought my 8800GT and the 48 series were released a week later at the same price.
 
i dont know if u'll see a 4850 drop below R1K.

the cheapest i've seen it is R1200, sounds like you got a really good deal there.

But i must ask, a 4850 is all very well, but what manufacturer is it? A sapphire 4850 and a powercolour 4850 are two very different cards!
 
I have no idea what card it was but I remember seeing OC somewhere on the box; and it was black.... I was not taking note....

I have to agree waiting around a while is good advice, both to see what the new offerings are and what effect it will have on pricing on existing cards.
