So knowing that I can pick up xeon e5 2670 for around R1100 on ebay ,I was keeping lookout for cheap x79 board to run this chip.

I got lucky and managed to buy a second hand msi x79 board for R900 ,2 ram slots does not work ,but the other 6 does which is more than enough for me.

Will post some benches etc once I have it up and running. ETA on chip arriving is around 2-3 weeks.

Anybody else running one these cheap xeon chips for gaming ?

Reviews shows they keep with skylake in multi threaded games.

If this works out I might try out a 12/14 24/28 thread xeon chip with a x99 board ,these chips seems to go around R2500 on Ebay.
 
Nice I suppose..
Still too many things that can't take advantage of high counts of cores.
Not to mention the lack of clock speed on the high-thread Xeons.

Did you buy an engineering sample chip from Ebay?

Also, knowing that 2 ram slots aren't working would bug the hell out of me. Wouldn't that pull down your memory benchmarks?

Think it is none ES chip ,most of these ebay chips came from facebook upgrading there servers.

Memory should still run fine ,as I can still have quad channel with 4 slots filled out of the 6 . Only have 4x4gb memory to use . The memory slots are not working ,because of some bend pins I believe.
 
Unless you're playing 2 games at once, I'm not sure what the benefit is likely to be :)

Well the benefit would be the price of the older hardware, I guess.

My main question would be, how does this cpu compare against the latest Skylake cpu's, in terms of fps in games. A 2nd hand i7 6700k could set you back about R4500-R5000 (or a tray CPU new), so for R1100 how close does this one get?

Eh, I tend to run far more than just a game at the same time.

Just last night:
2 Browsers
Teamspeak 3 (why does this chew as much cpu as it does??!)
WebM for retards, busy encoding
Visual Studio 2015 U3
OBS buffer recording at 9k bitrate 1080p
ArmA 3
Electron App (electron is ****e, **** webdevs)

It all adds up :).
 
Those CPU'S though. Looking for a mobo then I'll bite as well.
 
Ok, so this started bugging me last night. Initially I was all for this, and started looking for a motherboard. I eventually found one on ebay for $200. I made a note of the price, and saw the price being about R4000 for a Mobo and cpu.

Then I thaught to myself, but wait, this doesn't have a warranty. If something breaks, you'll have to replace it out of pocket. I did some more digging, and noticed that I can get an AMD 8 core cpu and appropriate Motherboard for just shy of R6000. This includes a warranty.

Just keep in mind, these xeon CPU'S and the chipsets they used have been discontinued. Finding replacement motherboards might soon be impossible.
 
That rig will get snotklapped by a 6600K in most games. In fact, even an i3-6100 will slap it silly in most games.

Your Xeon is only one gen newer than my rig, and I need to be near 5 GHz to keep up with a new stock i5 in most games.

When it comes to media, however... I cone close to an LN2 cooled 6950X.

Most impressive part is getting an LGA2011 board for R900 (all be it not 100%) :wtf:

Correct it is risky ,that's why it's only worth the risk if you get a cheap board.

My total bill is so far is R900+R1200 ,same price as new I3 6100 :p Customs will probably be R200 for the chip.

I would like to see how the chip runs with dx12 games ,dx12 will be utilizing all the cores.

Keep in mind the budget part can easily be null and void when the Mobo fails, and you have to look for a new one.
