8 murdered in KZN attack

"Candidates for rehabilitation"

Nah. Send 'em off to the knackers, they're stuffed.

Accuses family of witchcraft, hacks family up with machete.
Yeh, I'm not sure they were sane to start with.
Too much maize beer.

Perhaps they just unfortunate enough to have an owl land on their rondavel one evening

She said ,despite the gravity of the crimes, there were substantial and compelling circumstances that the court should consider.

Among them was that they did not deny their guilt, were first offenders, worked and supported their aged parents and were candidates for rehabilitation.

Prosecutor Mbongeni Mthembu said, however, that the brothers butchered their own relatives and knew that there were infants of three, two and one years old among them.

I could never be a defense attorney. I would just say you know what, I agree with the court. Lock'em for life. Hell, if we had the death penalty, put them out of their misery and do the world a favour.

What must it take to defend someone like this?
I just don't know what to think of the advocate.

I personally would feel like a whore doing that job. Seriously .... I would feel dirty ... and to make me feel dirty takes a lot. :wtf: But someone has to do it. Our legal system and hopefully some form of justice depends on it. And as their attorney, you have to defend them to the best of your ability. Explore all the options to get them off or a light as possible sentence. vulgar .. but that is what it means, even if you know they are guilty as fck.

Knowing what they have done I just don't know what it takes as a person to defend people like this.
It must be soul destroying.
My step-father was a state prosecutor for years and his stories alone scared me.
Imagine having to defend the trash.

I think it takes a person that can literally detach from the situation emotionally and just get on with it. Something maybe like how doctors are taught and drilled and trained that you do not get emotional with certain situations. Remain detached and keep it factual and to the point. Mr le Roux, you have terminal cancer, and perhaps 9 months to live. Detached, does not affect them. Or perhaps they are breaking inside having to tell someone that, but have a face of stone. Dont know.

7 life sentences handed to 2 mass murderers in KZN

JOHANNESBURG - Two people have been handed seven life sentences for killing eight family members in KwaZulu-Natal.

The mass murder took place in Mabaleni on the south coast last week.

An elderly man and three young children were among those hacked to death.

The two suspects pleaded guilty to all eight charges and were also given an additional 20 years each.

Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi say the accused, aged 26 and 28, hacked their family members to death in what appears to have been a witchcraft ritual.

KZN mass murderers to appeal

Ingrid Oellermann, The Witness

Pietermaritzburg - The men who hacked eight people to death at Umzinto on the KZN South Coast can appeal the life sentences imposed on them for seven of the murders.

Judge Jacqueline Henriques on Friday accepted a submission by advocate Zina Anastasiou that another court might find that the seven life sentences imposed on Thulani, 28, and Sibonelo, 26, Mncwabe were inappropriate and conclude that lesser sentences were justified.

The accused did not apply for leave to appeal the 20-year prison sentence imposed on them for the murder of their uncle Mantinga Mncwabe, 72, which was motivated by their belief that they were bewitching their family.

State advocate Mbongiseni Mthembu opposed the application for leave to appeal. He said the people the accused had butchered were mainly women and young children who were eliminated because they were witnesses.

“Even if it was dark inside the rondavel, a 1-year-old child is so small that they must have been able to distinguish between children and adults ... The people must have cried out and the children’s cries would have been different to the adults,” said Mthembu, adding that the case has drawn attention and shocked people all over the country.

Judge Henriques agreed it is a very serious case and said this was one reason why “three heads might be better than one” when considering an appropriate sentence.

She granted the accused leave to appeal to a full bench (three judges) of the KZN high court.

She said when the accused went to commit the crimes their intention was to harm only (their uncle and aunt) Mantinga and Sibonisile Mncwabe, and not anyone else. In addition the murders were all committed in close proximity of one another in both time and place.
