8800 ULTRA vs HD2900XT

dont buy unknown brand names for 1

i would suggest a bigger power supply with an ultra or x2 gaming card

6700 dude not everyone knows everything he can change his mind as much as he wants to

nobody can tell him what to buy its his money at the end of the day

i would not buy the ultra i would wait for next gen cards unless your in a rush

To answer your question : 8800ULTRA - although you WILL kick yourself in 3 months' time, and I wouldn't recommend this.

To comment on the post about the upcoming 3870x2 :
The 3870x2 is basically just 2 x Radeon3870 GPU's combined in a single card, so if you consider buying this I'd rather recommend not waiting for the 3870x2 and just buying 2 x 3870 cards from Prophecy (R2500 each).

The system I would currently go for if I were to be in your position depends on a few variables :
  • How long are you willing to wait before buying the system?
  • You say that you get "half" of the R15k now, half in a few months' time... Do you want a working pc with the R7500 you have now or are you just considering buying some components and leaving it there in their boxes till you get your other money and then building your pc?

If you HAVE to buy a card NOW, the best bang-for-buck card you can go for is the 8800GT.
If you are willing to wait, buy a 9800GX2 or 9800GTX or 9800GT in a few months' time.

BTW : The X2900XT is old and outdated.

PSU : This is one of THE most important components if you're looking to buy a performance pc, so DON'T settle for cheap generic PSU's, buy a Coolermaster, Antec, AeroCool, OCZ or any other well-known PSU-brand. And get an SLi-certified PSU.

If you have to buy now buy 8800 ultra.

But rather wait 9800gx2 is scheduled for release on Valentines day and 9800gtx in March.

I haven't seen any previews of the 9800GTX yet, but the 9800GX2 is basically 2x8800GTX GPU's built into a single card, with added DX10.1 and PCI-E 2.0 support.

Therefore the 9800GX2 is said to be about 30% faster than the 8800ULTRA (Discussed in another thread)

So if I were you I'd just wait patiently till March for the 9800GTX.

P.S. - It's gonna be a huge LOL comes March when I expect to see 8800ULTRA cards etc going for R2k-ish second-hand...

Wonder what the 8800GT's will go for by then... LOL

The 9800GX2 has 2 printed circuit boards and is not 2 GPU's on a single pcb

I do not see the Ultra dropping significantly in price this year
 
i thought 9800gtx2 was a g92 chip

i also would not say that 30% is anything is scoff at

one month wait 30% gain same price

its pretty much a no brainer

even the 3870 would be better than the ultra

buying the ultra is a waste

It's a G92 chip without DX10.1, like the new 8800GTS.

Definitely faster than the 3970X2, but it will probably cost a lot more.
 
Yet another thread asking which is better - the 8800gt or the HD2900xt. Its common knowledge that the 8800gt flattens ALL the ATI cards currently available!.

I wonder when the next thread will be posted asking exactly the same thing again!.:rolleyes:
