so I've been doing a lot of reading up on the 8800gtx overheating issues lately. i seem to be having the same problem. i recently got an 8800gtx and I am running it in a system with a 3.0ghz pentium 4, 2gb ddr2 533, 430w dual rail 12v psu, 80gb ide hdd. running winXP, and no optical drive on an ECS P4M890T-M. i am getting weird artifacting in cod4, modern warfare 2, Unreal3, Vegas 2 and most other games. my temps are 58 at idle and 78 at load. i replaced the thermal paste but not the pads last night which helped the temps. i am currently running 260.99 drivers, fwiw. i know the psu is under spec but it has 2 12v rails @20a each so I should be covered? do i just have a bad card

Try baking it :) OR if you have some warranty(doubt it) send it back...but ya, those cards notorious for busting after a few years. A good baking session should set it right for a bit, but i advise that that is the last solution you should take...type baking video card into google for some guidelines. GL

I actually did the baking trick this morning, hehe. no luck though - still artifacting. I had it @ 200 degrees for 7 minutes, but I don't think it was quite long enough. I might try again tomorrow or so. Could it maybe be bad VRAM? Read a few topics on that just now, so it's one more thought running through my head. maybe I can try a memtest for Graphics ram and see how it goes

200 degrees, are you insane?

I've baked my 8800GTX twice, both very successful in reviving the card from it's artefacting death.

Both times I put the card in a pre-heated oven at no more than 150 degrees for exactly 10 minutes then took it out and let it cool for an hour without touching it at all.

Make sure you put it on little balls of tinfoil (four of five) on a baking tray when doing it.

Oh, and I also recommend getting a custom cooler if you don't have one already.

I had my mom's oven on 180'C (pre-heated) and then I "successfully" baked my friend's 8800GTX for just less than 10 minutes.

I've posted my results on Prophecy forums.

I tried mine on 205 degrees last night, for 10 mins, and then left it to slowly cool off for another 20 mins. This morning I put the heatsink back and fired her up.Less artifacts in UT3 but still a few here and there.I did not smell solder whilst baking as what most people did.I tried a video RAM tetster to see if I have a bad chip, but did not see any problems. AtiTool 0.26 also doesn't report any after 30min

Okay, an update! (Kind of)

Sorry about the crap layout of the previous posts, I was posting from my phone and it limits me to 1000 characters per input.

Back on topic - I installed Windows 7 Ultimate today to try and get it to work. After the Setup asssessed the performance (Windows is checking your video card performance), it loaded the desktop with some minor atrifacts - little white or black boxes here and there. I installed the latest drivers through Windows Update and updated DirectX to the latest I could find. I fired up a few games and it seems fine. Could only try for so 10 minutes but it seems much more stable - no signs of atrifacting anywhere.

So maybe it didn't want to work so lekker with XP? Who knows :)

I have a 8800GTS 640m lying around, because it is "artifacting". Maybe I should give this a go. :D

I've cooked over 50 different hardware components because they had failed due to an unknown reason. They were all worthless but they have since been given new life :) (Well about 80% of them anyways)

That's because you can't bake a PSU. ;) :D

Another update - played about 30 mins of UT3, and the artifacting returned. FML.

Guess I have a borked card...I tried the fan speed at 100% and the two 80mm fans above it also at full tilt, which keeps the core temp at 57 idle and 64 - 68 load. So I don't think it can be heat...I have new thermal paste on, too.

Time to throw in the towel on this one

This is also why I say that I have 80% success rate with reflowing components, as some just don't work.

i had the 8800gt .. similar heat problems .. the fan controller sux, use rivatuner to manage the fan speeds .. you will rarely go over 80C.

Yup the fan controller does definately not know what is best for the card - I guess the more cards fail, the more money nVidia makes

LoL, baked my 8800GTS 640mb @ 150c for just over 10mins and it works again. :D Haven't done some heavy gaming, but at least the pc boots again.

Good to hear it worked for some! Mine is now with the insurance, pending replacement (In other words, 6 months without a GPU again)

*sigh*

I have a 8800GTX you can buy from me :)

I see you in PE as well, which makes things easier. Let me know if you are interested.
