HI

I would like some comments on how to possibly get this issue fixed or am i expecting to much?

I upgraded my ADSL line from 4Mb to 8Mb. I have noticed some improvement but this is still running way to slow for what I am happy with. Speedtests using various ISP accounts show a consistent 3.8 -> 3.2 Mbps download speed

router stats:
SNR Margin 6.0
Line Attenuation 16.7
Data Rate 3207
Max Rate 3884
Power 19.5

from what I see it seems the line has not actually been upgraded to 8MB but the call center has closed the upgrade ticket.
I have had the port reset, restarted the modem a few times and waited for 5 days.

I have logged a ticket that has been closed and then relogged(seems their latest plan to avoid actually fixing issues)

what should I try next?

Have you tried connecting the router to the wall directly without filters and removing all other devices from the network?

Currently you are stuck at 3.2Mbps due to your SNR, but your SNR should be way higher than what it currently is as you have 16.7dB attenuation, which should actually give you a max of about 20Mbps. (telkom's system will keep your line sync/rate at which you are connected so that you always have 6dB SNR (Signal to Noise ratio) and will resync the line each time you go below (your line should randomly go dead at times when Telkom's system establishes a new connection)).
Could you also connect a phone and see if you hear any noise (after replacing the filters or before you go removing everything) on the line, any crackling, etc.

I have the exact same problem. Logged several faults, with my current fault open since September. No resolution. Had 2 technicians come see if they can find the problem, on atleast 4 occasions. The latest communication from the technician is that they need to get a specialist out to come look at the problem.

I've tried with and without a filter.

There is terrible noise on the phone line though.
So maybe it's hardware.
But it was working for the first 1-2 weeks after I upgraded.

I have given up. I even tried to downgrade back to 4mbps. Still waiting for feedback.

Goodluck! Hope you have more success than I had.

Is your line clear of trees/branches?

Cleared ours up and it solved the line noise.

I unplugged all the phones filters etc last night.
restarted the ADSL modem
still the same speed. pretty consistent around 3.8Mb

This morning I get a SMS from Telkom the ticket has been closed as resolved (Eish)

Trying to get hold of them again to reopen the ticket.

So after having terrible noise on my line, my phone line was completely dead for about 2 weeks. Telkom sorted out the issue today. Apparently something was wrong at one of the poles in the park next to my house. Phone line is crystal clear now. Here's ADSL stats:

Up Stream - 380 kbps
Down Stream - 5119 kbps
Attenuation Down Stream(db) - 30
Attenuation Up Stream(db) - 17
SNR Margin Down Stream(db) - 27.4
SNR Margin Up Stream(db) - 29.1
Attainable Down Rate - 16480 kbps
Attainable Up Rate - 1148 kbps

Phoned them again. They don't know why I'm not getting the 8mbps I'm paying for. I thought that I might be on 4mbps on their system, but apparently not. Now waiting for a tech specialist to come have a look in the new year.

We'll see how it goes, but so far the Attainable Rates looks much better after they fixed my phone line (was hovering around 3000-6000).

Well I am also stuck on 5 megs seems that is all they can give me even though people near me have 10 megs.

I have an SNR of 8 and i am running 10 megs. I was struggling for a long time before this. My SNR was 6.2 to 7.9 but it mostly be below 7. They eventually did a swap of something in the exchange. those technicians are never clear on what they do. I dont think they like to educate us.

There is apparently a way they can increase the noise on your line so that you do get a better SNR.... they can actually make the noise ....to increase the SNR (im talking over and above line faults or network card fault). Factors permitted such as Attenuation also. If you have an Attenuation of 40 you cant ask for much.
I used to have 43 but now i have 38 , that little bit make so much difference. It has an impact on the SNR also.

I logged a new fault yesterday - Internet was completely down. Realised after about 1 hour the maid unplugged the router while cleaning
In any case, Telkom just phoned me - a smart guy from Cape Town.
I told him the line is working now, but the speed is not what it should be. He was able to fix the issue within 5 minutes, without me unplugging or restarting the router.
He explained that Telkom has software that automatically lowers your line speed if there are issues in your area.
Since they fixed whatever at a pole close to my home 2 weeks back, he increased the speed manually.
So far, no issues.

Up Stream 635 kbps
Down Stream 8190 kbps
Attenuation Down Stream(db) 30
Attenuation Up Stream(db) 17
SNR Margin Down Stream(db) 11.3
SNR Margin Up Stream(db) 14.1
Attainable Down Rate 15656 kbps
Attainable Up Rate 1100 kbps

Great news.

All it really takes is you getting in touch with 1 person who knows what they're doing. Everyone else is a sheep and while it might seem like they're trying to help you, they probably just don't understand the core issue.
