8ta 21Mbps HSPA+ network tested

Nice speeds and best of luck to 8ta!

One gets the impression 8ta planned their network roll-out methodically, especially if you read the comments on ensuring cell density is correct for a loaded network. As opposed to an unloaded network (with towers far apart) that only works well for the first few hundred subscribers and then develops more holes than a Swiss cheese.

(PS. Notice great restraint in not posting a 28Mb/s speedtest. ;) )

Would be nice to be able to test this, but there is zero 8ta data where I live in the middle of Joburg. No MTN or VC either - really only Cell C !

Without compelling data packages that network is going to remain nice and fast for the six guys which use it.

Ya, as Jannie said they have been very methodical in their rollout. 18mbps is pretty much the best result any 21mbps site can achieve!
(21mbps is the over the air speed, data speed after overheads etc is about 18mbps.)

Posting speed test results from an unsaturated network infrastructure can be pretty misleading though?

Good luck to 8ta. Hopefully someone making decisions there realises that without some seriously aggressive data pricing the speed of the network is largely irrelevant. Hopefully they'll decide it's time to shake the market up bit.

Why can't i get 3G? when i select 'SA02' as my network on my 8.ta sim i get access denied just as i said in my thread under the Telkom Mobile section....

Yet the 180 call centre confirm that if i do a manual selection on my handset i should select 'SA02', If 'SA02' does not show up on a manual selection i should choose MTN!!! yet another telkom fail...

I get 'SA02' GSM & UMTS on a manual network scan,

Not for long....

We will see. Telkom and competitive rarely go in the same category, plus they have to ensure they don't cannibalize their adsl base.

Still while I am sceptical I will reserve judgement till they release their new products.

Cmon prove me wrong and bring out a ten gig product with a bucket of offpeak data. You can do it.

Think 8.ta realises they need to start making some cash.

My mom told me that this 8.ta woman phoned her today and was persistent to the extreme....then my mom told her that their network has not proven itself yet (coming from an old lady, I was VERY impressed) and that she is very happy with Vodacom.

I think she is happier with Vodacom than I am, cos she only uses voice + sms & does not know how Vodacom is making her son sweat with expensive data bundle prices. :(
