I'm on the internet5 promo, with an E367 modem. Normally around -80dBm signal strength.

The last two or so weeks, it has been impossible to game with this connection. I initially thought it was just P2P traffic getting throttled, because I have been trying to play MW3, but the problem remains for other games. The ping is unstable as hell, I have tested the following titles:

Starcraft 2 ( starts off fine, thereafter everything becomes non-responsive and I get disconnected )
World of Warcraft ( ping never under 1000, locally and globally, from ~250ms a few weeks ago )
Modern Warfare 3 ( cannot ever find a game, if I do - and note this is local - my ping bar goes red and I am forced to leave or I get disconnected )
Modern Warfare 1 ( ping varies between 90 and >999 constantly, unplayable, and this is on local servers )
League of Legends ( ~3000ms ping playing on US servers, up from about 400 a few weeks ago )

Here is my latest pingtest result, which shows that the connection is unstable as hell. Also note that all the above games worked perfectly fine about 2 weeks ago.

In my 3 months of using 8ta, this has repeated twice now. Great speeds for a while, good for gaming/youtube/etc, thereafter I'm at dial up performance for quite some time.

I have sent an email to [email protected], which achieved nothing. Don't know what else to do, tired of having a great connection one day, and utter rubbish the next.

Unfortunately I don't think there's much more you can do...
If you've looked at this forum, I'm sure you've seen that 8ta is the most erratic network out there.... Hopefully it's just growth pains though.

please, anyone who takes the time to read this: WIRELESS IS NOT MEANT FOR GAMING AND YOU WILL ALWAYS SUFFER PERFORMANCE ISSUES WITH LATENCY SENSITIVE GAMES!!!!!

Count yourself lucky that you were able to play up till now.

Always? Almost never had a problem with Cell C in Jhb..... Got 25ms ping.... And anyway, you should tell that to Telkom, they are so incompetent, they even sometimes recommend wireless over cable..... Just look at the way they went with 8ta, proof is in the pudding, and radiation in the air.

I have been able to play on usb tethering through my HTC desire while on an MTN contract, possibly the worst imaginable setup for online games, so seriously, stop posting this rubbish.

Wireless broadband ( 3G, HSPA ) is not ideal but it is certainly capable of demanding online games, a friend of mine plays BF3 / MW3 / LoL / HoN / TF2 on iBurst without any issues.

+1
I sometimes use CellC to play MW3 on XBox. Works great. Never issues.
Also JHB.
The CellC SIM is in my old HD2 and I tether to it.
When we go away on holiday I play via my Galaxy Note (Vodacom) or HD2. Depending on which gives me the best connection. CellC first prize though if I have coverage.

Way back when it was not good to play FPS online via a wireless connection, but not so anymore. Works great.

This.

Seriously regretting 8ta.

True, but I have to say, I have been getting great results with the cell C speedstik on BF badcompany. Multiplayer.

Of course, you have to have a good signal strength like full UMTS. HSPA is to slow.

I have played on 3G, HSDPA and H+ with not much difference. Only requirement is at last a constant 3 out of 4 bars.

Down on holiday in Pennington I even jammed via Vodacom EDGE with a full strength connection. Was quite a bit laggier than 3G and > but still playable and I got a good few hours in.

At home I have monitored my ADSL connection via Kerio Control real time monitoring. Playing MW2 on XBox. Outgoing sits at around 5k to 8k/s and incoming 10k to 15k.
You don't actually need a lot available to you to jam online as long as your latency is low. A high strength connection is required to get that on wireless.

WoW i cant believe you cant game on that!!!!!!!
Im on mtn lite uncapped and i get http://www.speedtest.net/results.php and i play Fifa, MW3 and Battlefield3 just fine!

Since 3G is not stable and fluctuates wildly try running a torrent while playing, that always sims to help me because remember while gaming you are constantly sending data back and forth so your connection will not be the same as when downloading and your speed is constant, when gaming I always saw my speed was fluctuating from 4mbps to 0kbps(on Vodacom) and gaming on 8ta was more or less the same, for it to pick up again it took 1-2 seconds so it was lagging, I saw once that while running a torrent my speed is always up so I tried gaming like that once and I have never looked back

Maybe you should try it

ps. this make way more sense in my head :wtf:

lol I'll give that a try, it does make sense.

But it seems as if there's a certain time of day that things go downhill. For example, I can play HoN on international servers at a fairly stable level early in the day, but later on my ping spikes regularly from 300 to over 1000ms.

The speedtest results are quite good, but they are only for a short time frame and don't say much about the stability of the connection. My pingtest results aren't bad either, B grade connection. It's decent for local play, but as soon as I try to connect to overseas servers/hosts everything goes to hell; and then in the evenings not even local is playable, Modern Warfare 1 also fluctuates between ~80 to >999 regularly.

I have the same issues.. daytime my ping on local server are 40-50 and on the europe server for league of legends it 210 +-.
But after 6 it becomes so unreliable and erratic it jumps all over the place.. This is caused by to many ppl using the network in the evenings..

8ta is not equipped for that amount of users... they must upgrade their backbone/equipment .. this is the only way this issue will be resolved. And this was confirmed by a tech that visited my house from TELKOM..... They have a lot of complaints about this and was pretty pissed off at 8ta himself...

And again tonight ... literally a 20-25 second delay in HoN.

Meh. And the 8ta rep has gone AWOL, not that him being here achieved anything

What the hell is going on. Just pinged 1070ms to Europe. Thats horrible, had same issue last night. C'mon 8ta why is it always a constant struggle.....sort your network out! Got a clan match tonight, i'd rather not play. Which makes my business to you pointless, don't see how you can take my money with service like this.

Hi sTrideR|JP!

Our technicians have been trying to get hold of you on the mobile number you have provided, but are not getting through to you. They called 3 times between 12pm and 2pm on Friday 16 March 2012 and did leave voicemail. Please provide an alternative contact number so an appointment can be arranged.
