According to the coverage map on the 8ta website, I should be getting 3G access in the Southern Subs of Cape Town, but can only get Edge (Roaming on MTN) with very poor data throughput of 30kbps or so. The signal strength is also 0-1 bar, up to 3 bars if I put the modem up on a USB extension and hold it up in the air.

Has anyone else experienced this? Are there some modem settings to force a 3G connection on the 8ta modem? Is an upgrade...imminent?

Well, things are looking up, last night, I managed to get onto 3G and got peak downloads of 1600 kbps vs the 30 kBps on Edge the other night. Speedtest reported 1.05Mbps up 250k or so down to JHB. Much more like it. Instead of 3 days to download windows updates, I loaded the Java and Adobe Flash packages in a matter of minutes..

However, ive not been able to get back onto 3G since, although Edge is now giving me a usable throughput around 150kBps. Anyone know whats going on with the local network in the deep south?

Its been up and down since then, mainly edge connections only but managed to get 3g if I sat in the middle of the garden with the modem on an extension mounted to a stick (real one) stuck in the ground, must have looked very odd at 9pm but I was overjoyed to get >200kbps!

Well, some good news, I fired off a mail to the contact centre around the time of the OP and only last night checked the smss in the inbox and found a message from them stating they tried to contact me and please let them know if I am still experiencing issues.

Well, its nice to know they are making an effort to solve the issues and I don't know what they've done but im now getting consistent 3G connections and data rates over 800kbps indoors nogal for the past week, so im happy with the outcome, if it can just stay that way.

Thou 8.ta is using MTN radio network I have found that speeds on 8.ta are better than on a normal mtn sim, I did speedtests a while back and found out on a speedtest I would get a huge difference between the two.

My guess > the 8.ta servers
