8ta: Internet contract pricing revealed

This seems to be data and devices >> Notebook+modem+data bundles...

http://www.8ta.com/deals/

the data and device deals are for the 36 month contract. What is on the article is the normal 24 contract with only a modem. I was expecting a better deal from 8ta since they've already seen cell c prices.

ok, maybe i am blind....but nowhere in the article does it mention 24 months or modem....please qoute from the article to confirm this

Well that certainly makes these deals more attractive. Get a R8500 laptop + modem + 3.2GB for R500 a month... Still don't like 36 month contracts though - really locks you in.

EDIT: Just seen Unreals post.

i stoped at a telkom direct store on the way home to find out more about this contract with the notebook, modem and data, who had to phone another store to ask the same questions as she did not know about this offer, who was intern told that they have not recived stock as yet and i must try again next month, they could not even tell me what the actual specs on this notebook is.

I like the competition. I love the fact that by the time my contract with Vodacom is over there will be good alternatives between 8ta and Cell C :)

Those laptop deals are not to bad. The Samsung R510 for R195 x 36months is actually a really excellent deal. It seems the laptop is about R7K cash (same as 36mths contract). Damit, I'm tempted to go tomorrow to get one now.

I need internet for a laptop but I want hard capped just in case the modem gets stolen.

More like R6200 cash, but yeah... if you are prepared to go for a 3 year contract for R195, it does look quite appealing and maybe a good buy. (better than buying it on budget account)

But the modem and 650mb is really worth nothing over 3 years. I think 2010 was quite a good year for broadband in SA, but 2011 will be better... well we can only hope :)

I agree on the 650mb (its OK for email). Just today at g south africa we where shown presentations on the importance of cheap bandwidth based on mobile trends.

But if the lappie is R6200 cash, then your only paying R22 pm for the data. Not bad considering that the laptop will have access to WiFi 99% of the time. (Currently I have a Vodacom 3G contract I'm not going to renew as its only emergency bandwidth for my UNISA studies and working on remote servers)

Yip, like I said .. could be a good deal.. I was just saying the a 3 year contract of any sort is a looong time. You may just find MWEB selling the same lappie for R95 per month with uncapped in 6 months time :D hahaha.. just kidding ;)

Why cant they do that suf for free at lower speeds on pre-paid data bundles.its something!

Now it does make sence why telkom 3G just used to drop speeds, they were testing this!

I'm really upset to see this pricing - do they think we are fools!!!
Call this Competitive?

The hard capping alone will convert many. Our company is involved in a project where we are using prepaid to soften the financial loss if the simms get stolen. I'm going to get a SIM to test their data coverage first, but if its successful then I would recommend we use 8ta instead.

The worst is not 8ta's high data prices... but imagine getting LOCKED-IN a 24 MONTH CONTRACT with Internet 3 at R500 per month. That's R 12 000 for 76.8 gigabytes over 2 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CRAZY!!!

Add another 12 months and get the Samsumg R590 notebook with it...

Well I'm now seriously looking into this deal. I just spent the last couple of hours writing scripts that monitor my Vodacom 3G modem and then block athe modem once it has reached its cap (including my rollover from last month).

Works great and is really awesome and going to deploy it at my wifes business tomorrow so she can have internet without me worrying about mega bills.

Oh wait, I just discovered that my V3G is a 300MB per month deal. Muther F******. So that means my wife can just do some banking. No wonder I never used the damn thing.

OK, so let me upgrade the contract then (still got 12mths left on it I see). Oh wait, bring more money.

Going in tomorrow to find out about the 1,5GB deal. Enough bandwidth for her and no need for me to prick around with LINUX scripts to cap her. Also, she is next door to Telkom so I'm sure we wont have a problem with signal strength :)

* To upgrade my Vodacom Contract is already paying for the difference in bandwidth vs Laptop cost price/36mths.

Mmmm, so I went into my local Telkom Direct Store to get my contract (always a pleasure to do business with the Telkom Somerset West Main Rd branch) and they informed me that the rollout of branches handling contracts is on hold.

I can only do it at the Cannal Walk and N1 City Telkom Direct stores.

What a bummer as I hate driving and will only have time end of month to go out that way.
