Hi Guys,

Ok i want to really go for that 8ta 10 gig plus midnight surfer option my question is this can 8ta send out agents to do signal test because if i check the normal voice and data coverage map im in a full 3G spot, but if i check the big 5 promo coverage map im in a random white spot where the pink line literally ends next to my place ?

Also Is there any throttling on these packages ?

Or at the least is there some kind myBB member near kyalami hills with this promo that would come round and test at my place ! I will offer free meat and beer :D

Hi
Get yourself a prepaid 8ta SIM.
Email your contact details and 8ta number to [email protected].
Request it to be opened to the 8ta network (and please make reference to this post).
Give us three days to do, than you can test the coverage in your area.
Thank you

Hello 8ta,
Could you expand on that explanation you gave to InSanity (above) a bit please? (sorry Bud, 60yr old slightly tech-challenged ;-) I'd appreciate it if you would walk me through it in more detail, there are a bunch of people in this farming area who would sign on if the test results were positive

I'm near Pietermaritzburg, currently using Telkom Vsat to connect. They just installed a Huawei phone here (due to cable theft) and the 3g on that connects fine to the net. (If I get 3g signal on the Huawei, does that mean I can get your 8ta signal or is the Huawei working off a different mast?).

Now I want to power up a second PC with your 10gig package but don't yet have any kind of usb flashstick modem. Where do I get the 8ta sim? The Telkom shop at Midlands Mall? Once I get the sim, can I put it in a cellphone to test the coverage? How about if I use my son's vodacom usb flashstick modems, will the 8ta sim work in that for a test? Must I first buy an 8ta usb modem?

The youngster at Telkom/Midlands Mall didn't know what to suggest for testing ..... BTW Voda/Mweb and CellC all offer test sticks ;-)

I look forward to more info and thank you for posting here, there are a few of us who look forward to your answer and a possible solution.

Jim

Hi Jim, sure we can.

Currently all 8ta prepaid SIMs (on default) does not connect to the 8ta network as they roam 100% on MTN.

After we launched Internet 5 Promo (that only works on the 8ta network), we had plenty of queries on coverage and speed.

So we decided to give the user the option to test the network them self, before signing the 24 month contract.

The first thing you need to do is to confirm if you have coverage here http://www.8ta.com/coverage/8tanetwork/

If you do not have any pink close by, then the service will not work.

If you have pink or you still feel you want to test the 8ta network, then purchase a prepaid 8ta SIM from any of the channels or outlets.

(To view the list, please click on this link http://www.8ta.com/stores/)

Then email the 8ta number and the request to open the SIM to the 8ta network to [email protected]

(Please give three working days)

After we opened it, you have the option to connect to the 8ta or MTN network.

Load airtime and convert it to data.

Manually connect to the 8ta network (very important to do this)

Test the 8ta network at your home at your own time and leisure.

After you are happy with the speed and connection, you can either sign up for the Internet 5 Promo or go for the prepaid alternative 2GIG + 1GIG Promo.

Here is the original thread:

Hope this helps
Thank you

Hello 8ta rep

Did you miss this part? Probably means he is working off a wCDMA tower somewhere close to him. How difficult would it be to install a transmitter there (if there is not one already)?

EDIT: Jim, you could be lucky in that you are near to a Telkom 3G tower (w-CDMA network that they use for a fixed line look alike service). Follow the prepaid sim advice as per 8ta rep's steps...

Thanks very much MickyD, really appreciate the advice. I am hoping I can hook up to that w-CDMA tower ;)

Mr 8ta Rep, you also missed my question ......

"Once I get the sim, can I put it in a cellphone to test the coverage? How about if I use my son's vodacom usb flashstick modems, will the 8ta sim work in that for a test? Must I first buy an 8ta usb modem?"

Sorry to be thick but, once I get the 8ta sim, where do I put it? (please all refrain from the obvious answer! :) ) Hence my question, would the voda flashstick modem work with the 8ta stick in it or must I also buy one of those from 8ta?

many thanks

Jim

I have done as you suggest and hope to test soon. Thanks

SLIGHTLY O/T and not sure if ANYONE at 8ta actually gives a Continental BUT yesterday (THURSDAY 29 Sept) I drove the 25kms to Midlands Mall at Pietermaritzburg. Got there at 11.30am to find the only person serving the 8ta desk (for the whole of PMB) packing up and refused to serve me? Said he was going on a long-weekend, "come back Monday" ? (on a THURSDAY at month-end??)

So I had to drive a further 15kms up the hill to Hilton where a delightful woman sorted it all out in about 10 minutes. Don't hold your breath about signing any 8ta customers this month-end in PMB, you are closed until Monday!

Hooray! it looks like 8ta works at my house.
Boo ..... went to Midlands Mall Telkom shop today (Friday 7 Oct) to sign up but NOBODY on the 8ta desk, Telkom staff said the 8ta desk was closed all day AGAIN? Did Mr PMB 8ta go on 'long weekend' AGAIN? WHAT is going on with Pietermaritzburg 8ta? It is the Provincial Capital for pete's sake and seems we can't have one 8ta staff on duty during office hours?

Bloody poor!!!! Then again, what excuse did the Telkom agents offer? Surely they know how to sell 8ta packages!!!!

You can use other 3rd party agents... CNA, Edgars, Nashua, etc.

Standard Pre-paid per Minute and Pre-paid per Second SIM Cards will be available at Glocell, OK, House and Home, Pick n Pay, CNA, Edcon, Jet, Otto Bros, PEP, Rhino Management Group, select Telkom Direct Stores and Shoprite, once the SIM is activated, the subscriber will have to call the 8ta Call Centre on 081180 or 081183 to convert their current Pre-paid Rate Plan to the Pre-paid PSB (Per Second Billing) Data Promo Rate Plan which will enable the pre-paid subscriber with access to purchase the Once-Off Internet 2GB promo + 1GB Midnight Surfer Bundle.

Thanks MickeyD ...... the Telkom agents on duty could help with airtime but I had gone in to take out a 10gig contract and buy a dongle and the elusive (and well-rested) Mr PMB8ta was the only one who could do that, we were told? It really is a ridiculous state of affairs. We have to drive all the way to PMB Mall, park, walk, find out they are closed then continue the trek up to Hilton. Telkom don't publish a phone number for their Telkom Direct branches so you can't even phone ahead to find out if it's convenient for you to visit them? If we had a contact number then at least we could call to see if they can fit us in to their busy social calendar?

I know it sounds like a rant over nothing but it is very annoying trying to do business with a company when the only way to interact with them is to drive 25kms to their premises on the off-chance they decide to be open? I think it is important to feed back to management (hopefully via Mr 8ta on this forum) the frontline experiences we have when trying our hardest to buy Telkom products .... it seems you have to be really determined !

If Mr PMB8ta doesn't want to do his job, there must surely be a bunch of enthusiastic, knowledgeable youngsters who would jump at the chance to replace him?

Just to let everyone know that I am outside the regular 8ta footprint (according to the coverage map) but seem to be picking up a reasonable 3G internet connection off the same w-CDMA network that they use for my "fixed line look alike service".

Thanks for all the help.
Jim

Does anyone use an aerial of any kind to boost the 8ta 3g signal?
thanks

is there any way of pinpointing the location of an 8ta tower?.. i gt a mediocre signal in my house.. but decent at one corner.. would like to set up my router and usb dongle at the point where the signal is stongest :)..

THanks
