8ta / Telkom Mobile problems

I'm on the i5 promo. Can't even access my mobile networks settings (greyed out) to change it since there's no connection at all.

Going to go to a TM shop to find out.

Edit: there was a network problem on my simcard. Had a sim swap and it's working fine now.

Great news that you got it sorted.

Think I'll also go and trade in my old sim, almost three years old now and have been in and out a few routers.

Three weeks have passed now. The tech visited me 6 days ago, and I have heard nothing since then. When I called recently to check up on this, I was told that the ticket was still open. That's no good if it's not being actioned, is it?

I am just wondering when I will have internet again. Is that too much to ask?

BTW I got a new sim just a few weeks before the problems started. Anyone think changing the sim might help?

I have opened a new case on Hello Peter -- 3 weeks without oxygen would be easier to bear than 3 weeks without internet ...

TM called me today to say they are investigating. That's a start, I guess! But I'm guessing that they only called because I put this case on Hello Peter.

Hi burisch

An Incident 4360174 is still being investigated by the Network Department and more feedback will be provided.

I had a call yesterday to say that the engineers were looking into it.

3.5 weeks now, still down.

It's been down for over four weeks now. Not a whisper from Telkom.

What is going on??

I know the feeling, TM is like a yo-yo here. works for 5 mins, offline for 10 mins, and the cycle starts all over again. And I have full signal!
It has been like this for about 3 weeks now, just waiting for my last contract to reach it's end and I am gone like the wind....

Well they need to sort me out soon, else I'm finding another provider -- and going to make a huge stink, and demand refunds etc.

Hi burisch

We haven't received feedback as yet. We have requested for the update from the Network Department.

8ta - Village Walk tower demolished!!!!

A month ago, my internet service went down. I have kept complaining to no avail. You can see the full discussion at http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/591107-8ta-Telkom-Mobile-problems

So today at lunchtime, a second technician came out. He couldn't get any signal, not even MTN. Now, I live roughly between the JSE and Sandton City, right next to Village Walk. It turns out that Village Walk is being demolished, and the 8ta tower there was decommissioned on the same day my net died. Hardly surprising!

I am really really REALLY angry:

1) It took them a month to diagnose the problem. In fact, they didn't diagnose the problem -- the senior tech had no idea that village walk was being de-commissioned.

2) You would expect the financial hub of Africa to get pretty good service, right? Apparently not. There is a dead zone now. I hear that people in neraby offices are also complaining about this.

3) This demolition has been scheduled for FOUR YEARS. You would think that this would be enough time for Telkom to make another plan with regard to a tower to service my area.

4) I am still being charged, but service has been discontinued. This runs contrary to the CPA.

5) Their website is misleading. Their coverage map shows 100% signal across all of Sandown, yet I have no signal at this time. Obviously the map hasn't been updated this year, but regardless of this it amounts to false advertising. I'm sure the ASA would be interested.

Here's a screenshot of the affected area. White means no signal, dark pink means 100% signal.

Whatever the colours are supposed to mean, this image is one big lie:

Anyone else in Sandown that has experienced this?

I will explore every avenue to make sure that 8ta gets me running again asap. This is not acceptable.

Confirmed. Village Walk shopping centre is being demolished, and the 8ta tower was on top of that. I am starting a new thread about this - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/598273-8ta-Village-Walk-tower-demolished!!!!?

Please comment on that thread if you are affected by this.

So how is any of this TMs fault?

If they build a new mall, surely TM will put a new tower up?

I know telecom companies struggle nowadays to get permission to put more towers up.

Everybody wants a better signal, but nobody wants a tower near them.

This is most definitely TM's fault. They had ample time to prepare for this and should have put up some more antennas. There is no shortage of high-rise buildings around here to put them on.

I don't believe a new mall is going up, afaik it'll be an office building. And it'll be years till it's done.

Just got a Cell C sim, and that's working about half as well as the 8ta connection was, at double the price. But at least I've got connectivity.

8ta - Village Walk tower demolished!!!!

Yip, we have these issues as well. Last year pre May 2013 I was getting 15Mbps+ near Village Walk. After that I didn't take much notice as I went onto a Vodacom data contract but VC 3G also became useless until I started using 4G this year. Interestingly I pursued the same cancellation path with VC due to *dismal* 3G during the period June 2013 - Jan 2014. In fact I still think it's useless. Oddly their 4G signal very strong and really quick.

Right now I get 3 bars signal for Telkom Mobile but this is on my iPad. My phone doesn't fare as well and roams on MTN a fair amount. Funny you mention the tech being sent out because we've had them come see us too! I wasn't aware the tower was at Village Walk though - I certainly haven't noticed it before. So somehow my iPad still manages...

An interesting thing is I've heard there is a massive MTN installation at the Nedcor site so why aren't Telkom Mobile using that??? MTN LTE and Vodacom 4G are very good in that area by the way. I haven't been able to test for TM LTE to date.

Footnote: an awesome site for a cellular tower would be on top The Hilton in Rivonia Rd. Right now there's nothing up there that I know of.

I've replied to your other thread. I've been in the area for 4 years and a lot of people I know switched to TM from VC over this period. Now they've all got very poor signal.

As per the other thread, I believe there is a massive MTN installation at the Nedcor site. Why isn't TM using this tower like everywhere else??

I have no idea, however it might be that MTN was also on the Village Walk site -- makes sense, no?

Regardless, I'm in the heart of Sandown, right in the middle of the financial hub, and I get no 8ta, no TM, no MTN, & very little Voda. I do get pretty good CellC signal tho! Maybe you should take note, MTN&8TA&VODA ??? You are all really crap where I am. Which is also where I'd expect signal to be the best on the continent.

The first tech they send is always a placebo. The second tech I got for this incident, while I didn't actually get to meet him, appeared to be fairly clued up.

I don't have anything against Telkom Mobile personally. To be brutally honest, they have been the best choice for broadband in Johannesburg for quite some time now. I have been personally responsible for at least ten contract sales for TM; yet despite this I'm now out in the cold.

Attention TM execs: please reinstate service to my area as a matter of quite some urgency. I do understand the environment you're operating in, however I can't excuse that no meaningful action has been taken to resolve this matter, given an entire month. Please sort this issue out asap. Next Wednesday, I will again spew forth volumes -- and I really hope I can be saying how good TM is that they listen and react appropriately, rather than the alternative. Hang on, I've got an incoming call from M&G ...
